I feel bad for greats like Koufax who didn't have free agency. Skyrocketing salaries in professional baseball are the result of it. Except for a brief period in the eighties when the owners illegally consorted not to sign any free agents. Bob Horner got royally screwed by that scandal

In 1965, Koufax won 26 games and his second Cy Young Award in three years. He finished second to Willie Mays for the National League most-valuable-player award. The Dodgers paid Koufax $85,000 that season. Adjusted for inflation, that would be equivalent to $709,625 dollars today. Things have come a long way since 1965. Yes, things have come a long way. Nice job of making the inflation adjustment. That helps put things in perspective. In 2021, a run-of-the-mill MLB player making minimum wage earned $570.500 or a tick more than 80% of Koufax's adjusted salary. I reckon the bump the mlbpa is demanding will push well past the 100% mark. Or if we look at the other end of the spectrum, a current star making $35,000,000 is earning nearly 50 times the adjusted compensation Koufax made. I like where we are today, but I fear the pendulum will swing even farther to the point where it becomes ridiculous.

The trend will always lean toward the players because their union is so damn powerful now.

One thing only a small minority of fans will miss is the novelty of pitchers having to hit. Take this one for instance.
It seemed like nothing, but the final score was 1-0.

Advertising patches on uniforms? Somehow I just can’t see MLB players running around the field looking like NASCAR drivers. I doubt it would need to go that far. In fact if the space allowed was limited, the players could command premium prices when they whore themselves out. Then again, I don't know their plan. Would all (or part) the money for the rented space go into a pool that's shared equally by all players? Or would it be every man for himself? Maybe it would be more appropriate if only those who wear the tools of ignorance could display a corporate logo? For instance on their chest protector? God knows those poor bastards take a beating on a daily basis and knee problems invariably cut their careers short.

universal DH - I'm surprised MLB is taking such a hard line on that.
service time manipulation - I'm interesting is seeing exactly how mlbpa proposes to prohibit that.
etc - What?

If the players aren't being honest about why negotiations can't get kick-started this hiatus isn't going away soon

If the players aren't being honest about why negotiations can't get kick-started this hiatus isn't going away soon Tony Clark must think the fans are idiots. On-camera he claimed the lockout was unnecessary and provocative. History proves that to be false. In 1994, the players continued to work without an agreement until August 12, at which time they said screw you, to MLB and the fans, unless MLB accepted their demands at that time. Everything that happened up until that point was thrown in the trash, the season could not continue, and there would be no postseason. As much as I despise Manfred, he did exactly the right thing. "We won't be fooled again!"

MLB.com and the team sites are surreal now. All pictures and most mentions of current players have been scrubbed. Just a long list of retrospective content about history and retired players. That seems rather childish. It seemed that way to me too, until I heard them talking about this on Hot Stove. A clause in the old CBA allows MLB to use images of the players for advertising purposes such as the stats pages on MLB.com. When the CBA expired, MLB no longer had the right to use those images. Now MLB could be sued if they continued to use those images without consent. They're covering their ass by removing the images. I think we all know what MLBPA would do with the opportunity to sue MLB...

If the players aren't being honest about why negotiations can't get kick-started this hiatus isn't going away soon They don't get paid in the offseason, so this hiatus doesn't hurt them financially.

Essentially there is very little pressure to do anything from either side until January. So it is hard to believe that anything happens at least until then.
at that point the players who were injured late in the year, older players who have not signed anywhere as yet, and the young players who really want to work with the coaches on something will begin to pressure the players association. The owners really won’t feel any pressure until the first part of February. My guess is it will take until then before we really have something new to talk about. That is of course unless someone thinks of some new avenues to pursue.

If you drive on the saddle road from Kona to Hilo the first major thing you come to is the town of Waimea. The major employer for this town is the Parker ranch. When I used to go there it was the largest ranch in America and the source of the best steaks you will ever eat. From there you drive mostly up until you get to a long flat plateau that has an elevation of about 5000 feet or basically the same elevation as Denver. at this point you can look to your left and see Maura Loa and to your right Mauna Kea. Both of these volcano rise up over 15000’. I got caught in a blizzard once while doing doing high altitude training at about 8500’ on a storm that came up from Kona. Blizzards are really not that rare up there but the 100 mile an hour winds are the new twist to this storm. do not worry about the tourists at Waikiki or the surfers on the north shore. Their weather will be just fine.
