Has anyone seen that Trout has a back issue? The Angels owe him $35,450,000 each year for the next eight years. This is why the Astros do not do mega contracts, no matter how good and loved the player is. I hate the Angels but feel bad for Trout.

Wonder if Ohtani will test the market after next season and what LA will do if he does.

Return package is three prospects, names not known yet.

This is not bad at all in terms of setting the market. Nowhere close to a top 100 prospect. Best ranked guy has a bunch of averageish pitches. Same for Beck. This is a bunch of back-end starters, really.

I mean it's not a bad return, certainly. Sikkema and Champlain are both having excellent statistical years in the low minors, and Beck was the 55th overall pick last year. But considering Benintendi's year and being an all-star, this is by no means a package that makes me think Bell should cost a lot more as a fellow rental.

To put it in terms of our guys, that package is kind of like... Bielak, Solomon, and Santos. A little better than that, since the Yankees have such a deep farm, but you get the idea. Not a massive return.
For Bell at a similar price, something like Solomon, Dubin, and Perez might be close. Probably more but maybe not much more.

Okay, derp. The third piece is actually the Yankees #21 prospect, Beck Way, not their #20 prospect, Branden Beck. Not much difference, if anything it looks even better for the Yankees, not losing last year's 55th overall pick.

There are worse things than having a lot of good pitching depth for the postseason. And if you got Castillo and JV stuck around, your pitching sets up great for next year too. Again, nothing wrong with that at all. As for Meyers, Meyers is like Siri. He has a ton of athleticism, but that K/BB ratio is god awful and his defense isn't as good. (His arm is garbage unless he's hurt, btw.) He certainly still has potential and that's where his trade value lies. We just drafted a really good looking OFer and Leon looks to have more potential than all of our young CFers. I just don't see it as a loss. There's something wrong with it if you use up resources on that which could have gone to address a real problem like 1B though. Meyers is less than 275 ABs into his career, split up by a serious shoulder injury. It's far too early to be giving up on him. He's not like Siri; Meyers struck out much less in the minors and is a year younger. His hitting ability is real. Siri will almost never be even league-average with the bat in the Majors. You can't give up on a guy after a bad month. It's weird to me after complaining so much about Maldonado that you want to go with the all-glove, no-stick approach in CF, too, because of one bad month from a rookie coming back from injury. And especially that Leon is the solution; if you think Siri and Meyers have strikeout issues, just wait until you watch Leon for a while. Giving up on Meyers after a bad month and replacing him with Leon after a good month just seems really knee-jerk to me, and I suspect to the Astros as well (of course they have far more data and video etc. than we do so anything is possible). I hope you're right.

Guys, I find it highly doubtful that a rebuilding team would just slide Ruiz in a deal with Bell. If they did, I’d be ecstatic because every year they make re-signing Maldonado seem like a superstar free agent signing.

There is no freeing the Astros of Maldonado...He will be constantly re-signed....He could outlast Trout playing for the Angels or Strasburg for the Nationals....Quick Question: How many more years is Lindor with Mets?

Relievers are so unpredictable, Finnegan has had control issues prior to this season, and he's a late bloomer, already 30. Urquidy and Solomon for Bell and Finnegan would be more fair IMO. I'm still not sure I would do that, but it wouldn't be terrible value.

Yes....but somehow I would like to get Ruiz as well....how about the Astros offer Lee I would do that. I like Ruiz much better than Lee. I can't see that happening, Ruiz was one of the main components they got back for their star Turner, and he's a very talented and controllable young catcher. I doubt they would be willing to move him, but certainly not for a package centering on Urquidy.

Lot's of Astros stuff from Rosenthal this morning. I'll post it here:
What Astros want for one of their starters
"If the Astros fulfill their quest to trade one of their starting pitchers, they will not be getting prospects in return. No, the Astros would justify the move to its clubhouse by acquiring major-league help, according to sources with knowledge of the team’s thinking. Ideally, that player would be a catcher or center fielder under club control beyond this season.
The Astros are willing to trade a starter because they already are employing a six-man rotation, and right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. will become a seventh option if he returns, as expected, from a forearm strain in August. Such depth can be fleeting. But as things stand, the best way for the Astros to make their roster more functional would be to move a starter for a position player who would fill an existing need.
Who might that player be? Good question. The trade market is not deep in catchers or center fielders. The obvious potential targets — Orioles center fielder Cedric Mullins, Pirates center fielder Bryan Reynolds, Athletics catcher Sean Murphy — do not play for teams hellbent on making the playoffs. So, the motivation for those clubs to meet the Astros’ price for an established starter would not be especially strong.
The Orioles are a possible exception.
As a surprise wild-card contender, would they move three additional years of club control with Mullins for three of right-hander José Urquidy if the Astros also were willing to include center fielder Jose Siri and prospects in a larger deal? A number of teams are exploring trades for Siri, sources said. The Phillies, Marlins and Brewers are among those looking for center-field help.
Jake Odorizzi, 32, is probably the pitcher the Astros consider most expendable, but his value is not especially high (he also developed a blister on his right middle finger Tuesday night that is not expected to be a problem for him going forward).
Urquidy, 27, would be in greater demand. He had Tommy John surgery in 2017 and missed a combined 2 1/2 months with shoulder trouble last season. His stuff is not at the level of Cristian Javier’s or Luis Garcia’s. But he has a career 3.69 ERA and experience in the past three postseasons, including his five scoreless innings as the Astros’ starter in Game 4 of the 2019 World Series.
For the Pirates to trade Reynolds or the Athletics to move Murphy, they almost certainly would require a package of younger players. They could land those players by acquiring a pitcher from the Astros and then flipping him to another club. More likely, the burden would fall on the Astros to find a third team. The prospects they acquired for their starter then could be used as part or all of a package for Reynolds or Murphy.
Such deals are difficult to pull off. Perhaps a simpler path exists for the Astros to land a player not currently known to be available. Only one thing seems certain: If the Astros trade a starting pitcher, it will be for talent that will help them in the present, not the future.
Diamondbacks’ Walker a first baseman of interest
The Nationals’ Josh Bell is perhaps the first baseman most in demand, drawing interest from the Astros, Brewers and other clubs. But the Diamondbacks’ Christian Walker looms as an interesting alternative at the position.
Walker, 31, is batting only .204, the sixth-lowest average among qualifiers. However, he has hit 23 homers and his expected rate stats indicate that his actual ones should be better. He is also the best defensive first baseman in the league, as measured by both Defensive Runs Saved and Outs Above Average. And as opposed to Bell, a potential free agent, Walker has two years of club control remaining.
The problem in trying to acquire Walker is that the Diamondbacks value him for the same reasons teams would want to acquire him. Club officials, therefore, view a trade of Walker as doubtful. They want to improve their major-league club, not build the best farm system. And their farm system looks pretty darned good.
Outfielder Corbin Carroll ranks second and shortstop Jordan Lawlar 11th on MLB.com’s most recent list of the top 100 prospects, which it published shortly before the amateur draft. The Diamondbacks’ selection of outfielder Druw Jones could give them three in the top 25 once the list is updated.
The team, while currently lacking a homegrown pitcher on its major-league staff, is excited about some of its pitchers in the minors. Notable among those is left-hander Tommy Henry, who has a 3.64 ERA in 19 starts for Triple-A Reno while pitching in a hitter-friendly home park and hitter-friendly league."

As much as I'd love improvement at C or 1B, I don't see how they trade for one of those positions without pissing off the clubhouse (especially if you're trading one of the young pitchers to do so, which would also hurt team chemistry). The more I read and think about it, the more I feel like the only position they can add to that would be worth disrupting the clubhouse would be for CF.
I just don't see them benching Maldonado or Yuli.

I wonder if Urquidy straight-up for a corner OF like Austin Hays would be easier to wrangle. They have similar contracts and we could move Tucker to CF

But I think if they keep Yuli on the roster as a roleplayer, it wouldn't be a big clubhouse problem. Players, especially those in this organization, aren't as stupid as we like to think sometimes. They won't say it to the media but they know Yuli is providing no (or even negative) value right now and I doubt there would be a problem with bringing in an All-Star like Josh Bell. Even the dumber players know there's a difference between a guy hitting .237 with 7 HR and one hitting .302 with 13 HR. And if they're going to make a move, right after getting pathetically shut down by Oakland would be the time to do it.

They simply need more power than what they’re getting from Gurriel. At this point, why would any team pitch to Yordan?
