Belated Merry Christmas. So glad to be home. Getting older just makes you reallize how much a pain in the ass visitng is. Great time, but was so tired not being able to find a glass, a fork, a paper towel, a laundry hamper, etc. etc. etc. Home Sweet Home. The packing and unpacking sucks the most.....You arrive at your family destination, the in-laws. your kids bolt out the car door, your wife goes says hi to her parents....your first hour or two is unloading a SUV loaded with suitcases, bags, presents, food, etc. And then when you are finally done, full of sweat, you walk into the living room, everyone has a drink in their hands.... your wife and her family has that look like: "Where have you been". Then followed by: Dad needs your help with blah, blah, ....and you are thinking, I just want to say hello, sit for a second - that all of you have been doing for the last hour(s) and drink a f*cking beer.... I smell a Hallmark Holiday Special. Reserve the rights.

You say your hellos and be there to get your drink while your in-laws are pouring. If your wife mentions needing the baggage brought in, you ask for volunteers to help. Maybe you get some, maybe you don't. But if your kids aren't around, you leave their crap in the car.

As I've gotten old, I've discovered the phenomenon of "hiraeth", which is defined as "a homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past."
I went back home to east Texas to visit mom and other family for Christmas. It gets more difficult every time I go. Since my dad and brother passed away, the family isn't the same... there are no real family gatherings like we had when we were young, my mother is elderly and in extremely poor health (could very well be her last Christmas), the town is a dump/ghetto and totally unlike how it was when I was younger, I don't know many people back there anymore, etc.
I'll admit to a profound sadness when I saw how far my mother had decompensated since I last saw her...the obvious, cruel decline that comes with the turning of the earth, the frailty and signs of dementia. My relationship with my siblings and others has changed...evidence of that came to me when not a single person chose to join me for lunch at Little Mexico (my first choice any time I'm back home)...5 years ago, we'd have had 30 people there. It surprised me that one of my 2 remaining brothers didn't even come to visit with me at all while I was in town (1st time in nearly a year)...he sent a text and said he wasn't going to "be able to make it".
I drove by my childhood homes and found them all to be smack dab in the middle of rundown ghettos...those neighborhoods that had been so safe, clean and wholesome when I grew up there. It was depressing. The whole trip was depressing, and I came home a day earlier than planned (which cost me the cost of one day I'd prepaid for my hotel). I don't know that I'll ever go back. Mom will be gone soon, and once she's gone I can see the rest of the family just going their own ways. If she's not there, I don't really see any reason for me to go back.
Christmas sucked. I long for a return to the past, sort of like in the Twilight Zone episodes "Walking Distance" or "A Stop at Willoughby"

I long for a return to the past, sort of like in the Twilight Zone episodes " Walking Distance" or " A Stop at Willoughby" Our stories are so similar it is eery. One difference is I chose to keep the ancestral home that has become somewhat of a money pit. A few Christmas' ago, my wife and I decided to take a short (place is 2 hours away) Christmas quiet getaway. (Gave 2 kids a Xmas getaway trips, and other one is further distance). This place was built by my great grandparents over a 100 years ago, and was known as a saturday night meeting place for family all during my childhood, and earlier. Even though I made it very clear I was home, zero cousins stopped by. I chocked it up to people being focused on immediate family, and really prefered the peace and quiet anyway. The best part of my time there are the solitude of walking through the woods, reminisecing about my youth there. OTOH, I do sadly realize that my children have no interest in the place, and my generation (me and my wife) will be the last to enjoy it. That part saddens me. In any case, making a trip over there about 7 or 8 times a year, has always been a good outlet for recharging the battery. The town nearby is now a mere shell of what it was like when I was young. Instead of a nice slice of Americanna, it is overrun with what appear to be meth-headded rednecks who have allowed the town to become a dilapidated shanty of what it once was. In fact the home I lived in, in the mid '60's doesn't even exist. It fell into dis-repear, and was eventually leveled, and lost to nature. Subdivisons and additons that once were neat and tidy residences are now sadly unkept, and unmaintained. Minimal employment opportunity has taken its toll for sure.

Similar to what I posted on Facebook last night: GMTA Wall-e? Pretty prophetic. My read? The movie Idiocracy is ending up being a documentary. 400-450 years early.

For a guy who didn't think he'd make 2000, this is surreal.
THIS is 2020.

Well after this morning's trip to Wal-Mart, I think we are set for Xmas wrapping paper, bows, and tags until 2070.

I have now had about 8 hours to allow today's news soak in. Aside from player deaths, the darkest day in team history.
I want to now provide my observations and op-ed of my take of this fiasco.
(1) Draft picks losses and fines- Based on findings, acceptable retribution (2) A few days ago, I provided an estimate of what I thought was culpability of Hinch and Luhnow. Based on COB, AJ, and Luhnow statements, it seems my observations were spot on. More on that later. (3) AJ's firings. As I said in 3, I thought that's his knowledge of this matter was in the 75-90% range. That has seemed to pan out. His firing is needed. (4) Luhnow's firing. This is an absolutley disgusting development, and travesty Before continuing, let me cut/paste his statement. today.....
"I accept responsibility for rules violations that occurred on my watch as President of Baseball Operations and General Manager of the Astros. I apologize to the Astros organization, Astros fans and the Houston community for the shame and embarrassment this has caused. I am deeply grateful to Jim Crane for the opportunity to lead baseball operations.
I am not a cheater. Anybody who has worked closely with me during my 32-year career inside and outside baseball can attest to my integrity. I did not know rules were being broken. As the Commissioner set out in his statement, I did not personally direct, oversee or engage in any misconduct: The sign-stealing initiative was not planned or directed by baseball management; the trash-can banging was driven and executed by players, and the video decoding of signs originated and was executed by lower-level employees working with the bench coach. I am deeply upset that I wasn’t informed of any misconduct because I would have stopped it.
I agree with Mr. Crane that our baseball operations team has achieved far more positives beyond this significant negative. Many very good people have worked, and continue to work, for the Astros organization. I am extremely proud of the many executives throughout the industry who were trained and promoted in our department."
Now.... Jim Crane, you are a mf-ing, cock sucking hypocritical son of a bitch. You particpated in the 2011 COB and Selig's extortion event of the team to approve sale, based on accepting a league . You have no GD moral authortiy to say shit about Luhnow's character . If the point is about holding leadership accountable for these acts, then include yourself and sell the f__king team. POS bastard. Jeff Luhnow brought a winner and winning system to Houston. He is (was) more valuable to this team tham anyone. Includng Bregman, Altuve, Springer, or Verlander. This idiot move of yours will haunt us for decades
(5) The Players- The real culprits skate. More absolute stupidity on behalf of the COB office. Manfred is one brain dead mf'er.
Even after 55 years, I am really quesitoning whether I want to be a baseball fan anymore. Too many stupid people involved running it.

Hello everyone.... My vacation from baseaball has gone fine. Maybe a passing curioisty of the post season has peaked a mild amount of interest. OTOH, I still stand 100% with my basic observations two posts ago on this thread from 20 months ago. Jm Crane is c__k sucking SOB who deserves every inch of scorn his tarnished franchise now has thrown at it like layers of shit. Because now we have earned the lifetime meme of Cheaters, and that won't go away in at least my lifetime. Frankly, I am tired and embarrassed of it. I Wish I could send my $500 of '17 World Champion gear back to Crane in the same manner 18th Century setters gave blankets to the Indians.
Outside of Baseball, I think we all have seen and witnessed things in our country that were never experienced. COVID-19 has altered everyones life in a manner not seen in my lifetime. We've seen the political landscape take COVID and other SJW issues and turned this country into a downward spiralling socialist state. Thankfully I am in the last probably 15-20 years of my lifeime, so I won't have the live through the brunt of the damage,
Personally, our family has been lucky and avoided illness. Mostly precuationary though. I did know a few early on who succumbed to the illness, well before vaccines and before the medical community had a handle on the lethality of the disease. How the country, the people, and the world have not held the Chcoms accountable, is among the biggest mysteries of all. Sorry for the "Downer" tone, but.........
And last, I wanted to talk to the great folks over here. Thomas, Bear, etc. etc..... You guys make me laugh. My previous departing OPUS had nothing to do with the anybody here. Just the vein busting anger that the antics of Owner and Players hath bestowed on us fans. These guys were good enough to win it all without banging cans........ And in retrospect....... Did they think they could keep it secret in infinium? Quoting the Coach.... This was a massive exercise in "dumbassery"
