Is Wagner anything to get excited about? If utility infielders who can hit a little excite you, then yes. I do not ever expect him to have any serious power at the MLB level, but I think he has enough of a hit tool and enough of an eye at the plate that he can be a guy who gets on-base 33-35% of the time, steals a few bags, and plays all four infield positions well enough to not embarrass anyone. I like him, I just don't expect greatness, or even an everyday starter. But with the AFL explosion, he could be the backup infielder as soon as next season if Hensley or whoever isn't getting it done.

That's really not a terrible comparison, which would be a pretty big win for an 18th-round pick.

Nothing wrong with a Grossman for a bench player.

Pedro Leon went 0-4 with 4 strikeouts in his 3rd winter league game. 6 Ks now in 14 ABs in 3 games.

There is no denying that he is a gifted athlete. That said, he strikes out in about 1 of every 3 at bats. He steals a lot of bases, but gets caught stealing way too often... about one caught stealing in every 3 attempts. His K and CS rates won’t get her done in MLB.

Sounds like a trade chip then. His trade value is at its all time lowest. Hang on to him!

His glove will be the key. If he can be elite in CF, then worst case he's Jake Marisnick with some extra walks, and that's at least a serviceable Major League bench player. But the window is starting to close on him. Still 24 and only two years above the A-ball level, so you never know if the adjustment will click.

Pedro Leon’s numbers after 6 games in the PWL:
AB 25, H 6, 1 2B, 2 HR, 1 BB, 8 K, 1 S, 1 CS.
More of the same with 1 K every 3 ABs. Only 1 BB in 27 PA.

Who in the Astros minors/pipeline has a legitimate chance on being a future All-Star at these positions?
Catcher? First Base? Left Field? Center Field?

The more realistic scenario may be to sign Abreu and trade for McCarthy.

Listening, learning and researching.
My updated wish list:
Sign Abreu Trade for McCarthy Trade for Sean Murphy Sign Chafin Sign Lugo
If Brantley shoulder looks good, sign him to split with Alvarez time at DH/LF Because I'm a Yuli fan, sign him to be a bench player
Go to gallery furniture, and buy matresses, while the promotion is running: Astros win 2023, get double the money back of what you paid.

Of the players who are not already on the 40-man roster: Catcher - Maybe Collin Price? First Base - ? Left Field and Center Field - Drew Gilbert, Jacob Melton

I’m not sure we have the assets to trade for both McCarthy and Murphy without weakening the team. I’m betting on Uncle Mike to recover from his surgery and be productive by opening day. That said, I like the idea of trading for McCarthy and making him the regular center fielder. The guy’s platoon splits in 2022 are really good: Versus RHP - BA .284, OBP .344, SLG .427, OPS .771 Versus LHP - BA .281, OBP .337, SLG .427, OPS .764 Compare those numbers to Chas McCormick’s 2022 numbers: Versus RHP - BA .207, OBP .301, SLG .344, OPS .645 Versus LHP - BA .340, OBP .409, SLG .563, OPS .972 These are the numbers for Brantley in 2021 (I didn’t use 2022 because he was injured and his season was cut short): Versus RHP - BA .363, OBP .418, SLG .507, OPS .924 Versus LHP - BA .219, OBP .261, SLG .314, OPS .575 (Note: in 2019 Uncle Mike had a .928 OPS vs RHP and .740 vs LHP) If Uncle Mike returns healthy, he and Chas would make great platoon partners in LF while McCarthy plays CF full time…. and Yordan could DH full time. Then if we can sign Abreu to play first base the offense should be significantly better in 2023 even if we are stuck with Maldonado at catcher for another year. If we can’t sign Abreu or Bell, sign Contreras to replace Maldy as the starting catcher and the offense should still be better in 2023 even if we re-sign Yuli to play first base. I too like the idea of signing Chafin and Lugo.

Pedro Leon winter ball update:
G - 12, PA 47, AB 42, H 8, 2B 1, HR 2, SB 2, CS 1, BB 2, K 14, BA .191, OBP .234, SLG .357, OPS .591
Looks like Cintron isn’t having much luck so far straightening the guy out. I’m about ready to toss Leon into the reject bin with Whitley.
