But, I'd prefer to have Yuli in there on the bench with Dubon or Meyers stuffed in AAA until there is an injury. Rotate Brantley and Yordan in LF and DH. In place of some of the days off, let Altuve, Abreu, and Bregman DH 5-10 games each. Maldonado should not be catching more than 80 games. Plan to split the other 80 between Lee and Diaz, with Diaz maybe getting some work in at 1B when Abreu has a day off or DHs. If either/both produce well, start weaning the pitching staff off of Maldonado in favor of the young guys. With any luck, Lee and Diaz are our catchers of the future, and we focus money on extensions and keeping the bullpen strong. Our too-early-to-know-but-look-promising OFers take over for Chas and Brantley as Brantley ages and Chas gets more expensive (unless Chas keeps improving). It’s not like the Astros will be married to any of the young guys if they don’t perform. They’ll roll until July to see what they have. If they underperform at least it buys time for some other minor leaguer to advance or we can pick up someone at the deadline. When the dust settles, I still think we end up moving a SP this season. |

If the argument is really all about depth, then there are plenty of depth infielders still on the market. Andrelton Simmons, Jonathan Villar, Donovan Solano, Didi Gregorius, etc. Heck, give a one year deal to Jose Iglesias who can actually hit a little.

FTR - Never understood cheating....One woman is enough. My wife also asks me, would you remarry if something happened to her F*CK no....Too much work to get someone to like me and put up with me....Why in the hell would I start all over trying to find the next one? I would be retired from marriage. |

I fear that a lot of you guys are overly smitten by Hensley, based on just a small sampling of playing time at the MLB level. It will not surprise me at all to see him fall off the planet this coming season and get sent down. People are basing a lot on his AB against the Mariners, but they’re also expecting some kind of Yuli return to 2021. His value to me is his hitting, which was inconsistent at best last season. Seeing as how he’s almost 39 and will get sporadic plate appearances with Brantley and Abreu now in tow, I just don’t see the need for him. Hensley is by default a more useful option. |

Some people probably are overhyping Hensley, but since we're talking about a backup infielder, he doesn't have to be what he was in that small sample size for him to successfully meet expectations. Most projections have him as a league-average hitter who plays passable-to-good defense at multiple positions. If he's that, then I'm sure everyone heart would be totally fine with that. Of course, he could be less than that. Any prospect can bomb completely. But you can't let that stop you from giving them shots. If you go out and get a depth free agent, that guy can then be the fallback if Hensley bombs. But if you get Yuli, unless he's willing, you can't just stash him in AAA. You have to give him a spot and let him take ABs from Hensley.

Maton will make the team. One of those bench players won't. I see no reason to carry three catchers or have Dubon & Meyers 500 OPS on the team. |
