For those wondering, Corbin Burnes pitched 202 innings with a 2.94 ERA last year. And his team, in front of him at the arbitration hearing, blamed him for his role in the Brewers not making the playoffs.

And his team, in front of him at the arbitration hearing, blamed him for his role in the Brewers not making the playoffs. And I believe he was only looking for less than a million more than what was offered as well. He was wanting like $10.75 mil and got around $10 mil. Three top-10 CY finishes in a row (including winning the NL CY in 2021) while being arguably a top-5 all-MLB pitcher during that time frame, and they wouldn't just pay him the $750K to avoid arbitration entirely. |

This is why going to a arbitration hearing should be avoided, if at all possible. The player and his reps go into the hearing and present their case as to why they contend the player is worth the figure he is asking for. Management’s reps must counter by arguing that the player is not worth the money he is asking for, presenting their reasons why he the player is not worth what he is asking for. The hearing is not for the purpose of creating better labor-management relations. |
