Colton Gordon has been promoted to AAA. Tonight was his first start and he did well: 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 3 K. May through July in AA he owned a 2.48 ERA so it was high time.
Sugar Land won that game 18-1. Julks was 0-for-5 with two walks. Hensley was 3-for-6. Matijevic was 5-for-5 with four doubles. Whitcomb hit his 27th bomb. Leon had two hits and struck out just once.
Though off to a slow start overall with A- Fayetteville, top pick Brice Matthews drew three walks tonight, giving him 9 in 8 games, and a .400 OBP. He's also stolen six bases.
Luis Baez is hitting .309/.370/.420 for the Woodpeckers in 21 games so far.

Ronel Blanco shoved tonight: 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 8 K.
Hensley is hitting over .300 on the month so far, nice to see a pulse again. Same story for Pedro Leon.
Will Wagner is hitting .355 since coming back from injury on July 21st.
Zach Cole is hitting .313/.397/.657 in 19 games for Asheville since being promoted from Fayetteville.
Brice Matthews was 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo bomb.

Zach Dezenzo was mentioned on an MlB.com article.
Opinions, Ashitaka?

Zach Dezenzo was mentioned on an MlB.com article. Opinions, Ashitaka? I couldn't find the article in question, but I do like him. As expected, AA has proven to be a challenge so far after ripping up A-ball. So far this month he seems to be turning things around with a much more healthy OPS. Possible 3B of the future but admittedly a long shot still to be a starter.

Drew Gilbert since the trade: .358/.407/.547
Verlander since the trade: 4.50 ERA
You know, just in case anyone was wondering.

Presumably we would have won 2/3rds of those starts if Bielak were pitching, because he's also been about a 4.5 ERA guy this year. That's the point. JV has not been an upgrade so far. He hasn't looked like the JV of old, but we sure paid a price like he is.

Be honest; is this what you were wanting when we gave up our two top prospects?

We needed improvement at starting pitching, and JV has helped stabilize that for his part even if he hasn't been amazing. It's only three games. Let's not start overreacting over a tiny sample size.

Yes, we needed improvement. My point is the numbers say he hasn't been an improvement so far, there's reason to think he might not be in the future, and not only that but we paid a price for not just improvement but ace-level performance. Meanwhile the team as a whole continues to crater.

They're 2 and 6 with the Mets right now, and Gilbert is either on or near every major Top 100 list. Are we suddenly pretending they're not valuable prospects now that they aren't ours anymore?

Sure, they have some value, but you're trying to make them sound like they're Jackson Holliday or Paul Skenes.

I think Ash’s point was that the Astros found a way to make a garbage farm system even worse. That’s why he’s having a meltdown.

If they had gotten the value for them, then that's one thing. But they went out and got a big name that looks like he's not worth what was paid. They needed an upgrade. They paid for a MAJOR upgrade. So far it looks like they got neither.

They’re headed for the crapper at this point if they don’t keep Tucker long term.

After this series, you have to ask yourself if the gamble was worth it. The Mariners pooped on them. The Mariner's haven't won anything but a mid-season series. True, we’ll see what happens but this was a definite statement. The Astros aren’t going to waltz into the postseason like usual.

If the Astros win even just one pennant over the next three seasons, the deal was worth it, imo.
