Has any player ever been more important to his team than Jose Altuve? Off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone else in today's current game. He is also probably top 5 in MLB history in terms of importance to his team. He is just so fun to watch and we have been so lucky to watch him over the years.

I can’t think of a Houston player (or any player on any American sports team) in any sport who has delivered in big situations as often as Altuve. He is a major reason why “da Jankees” have been the Astros’ whipping boys for nearly a decade. I’ll admit I occasionally get frustrated watching his impatience at the plate and I still contend that if he had a bit more plate discipline he’d challenge .400 just about every year, but I can’t remember a single player being more valuable to a team over an extended period of time than Jose.
It’ll be an extremely sad day when he hangs up his cleats.

One great player can swing a team from cellar dwellers to the penthouse. When you’re one man on a 26-man roster the opportunities are far less. Jordan may have been more valuable to his team but only because of the inherent differences between the sports. Jordan had far more opportunities to affect his game than Altuve has his.

I wasn't trying to equate basketball with baseball. Just thinking of another athlete across pro sports who delivered in big game situations. A sport where your go-to guy gets more opportunities is natural if I were trying to compare someone to Altuve
But Jordan was not more valuable to the titles his team got than his supporting cast was to the championship rings he wears. Like you said, basketball is a different animal

It would be kinda cool to be able to toss at-bats to your best player like basketball players do with the basketball. "Maldonado gives way to Altuve here with 2 outs in the ninth. Altuve is 6 for nine on the day..."

1000 Runs: Achieved! 2000 Hits: Achieved! 300 SB: 8 200 HR: Achieved! 400 Doubles: 5 1000 RBI: 262 1500 Runs: 448 3000 Hits: 975 300 HR: 92
I'd love to see an old-school 3-4 hit day for Altuve with a SB or two. He's 10 Hits away from 100 Hits for the season. This would give him 11/13 years with triple digit HRs. The only non-triple digit years would be the wasted year of 2020 and his partial rookie season.

I know he won't have played enough games to be in the running, but if he'd have had even just another 20-25 games I'd have to believe he'd be a SS favorite again this year. He's still on pace for his 2nd best offensive season from a percentage standpoint behind 2017. To close out the year, it would be nice to see him reach 80 Runs 50 RBI 20 HR and 100 Hits.

Also, he's sitting at a .316 AVG right now with a .934 OPS. Barring some type of ridiculous crash in the last three games, he should end up with another .300/.900 season. It would be his 5th season with an OPS over .900, and his 7th with an AVG over .300.

He didn't exactly go out with a bang, but a successful season when he was healthy. Hopefully this time off reignites him and he gets hot for the postseason (unlike 2022). We really need the offense this year...

Right. But the 2022 postseason was uncharacteristically bad for him. I don’t see Peña replicating last postseason so they’ll need Altuve even more time. I like that we have actually have some benches pieces that can hit this time. Even if they want Maldonado to catch, you could see this lineup: Altuve 2B Bregman 3B Yordan LF Tucker RF Pena 1B Diaz DH Chas CF Pena SS Maldonado C And still have Dubon and Brantley available for pinch hitting duties.

Wonder how many writers will not have him on their HOF ballot? There will be some from NYC and LA that will never vote for him. But I think there will be plenty that will. Especially if he can have another 3-4 good years.
