I believe any signing, even one that small, will shoot them past the next luxury tax threshold. Crane probably doesn't want to do that for a backend starter. Doesn’t the tax threshold only apply with what the total team’s salary is at the end of the season? |

If it does turn out Ohtani racked up non-baseball related gambling debt, and tried to use his own ballgames to cover his losses, then that's exactly what Pete Rose did. Manfred doesn't have the integrity late commissioner Giamatti did though
