If only we could get Marcus Semien to get some tips from Bagwell.

I was talking with someone on Twitter about the 1B situation, and they were saying we need a RH hitter like Josh Bell to platoon with him. That led me to this realization:
Singleton vs. RHP: .351 OBP, 113 wRC+ Dubon vs. LHP: .333 OBP, 128 wRC+
If you combine that production, you're looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of a 118 wRC+. There are currently only 10 first baseman, even lowering the bar to just 100 PA, who can beat that production. Most are great players on good teams who are going nowhere (Harper, Freeman, Naylor etc.). Some are too young and good to be moved, even if their teams are not great (Horowitz, Busch etc.)
It really is just Walker, Alonso, and Vlad. Alonso is actually having a down year and is only at 119 wRC+ right now, so he might not even technically be an upgrade over a Singleton/Dubon platoon. For those not following it closely, Arizona is just one game back of a Wild Card spot, and even just seven short of the Dodgers for their division. They are not looking like sellers right now.
So it possible that Vlad will not only be expensive because of who he is and the extra year of control, but also because he might be the only legit 1B bat available at all. I continue to be in the "let it ride" camp. We need 2-3 pitchers in my estimation and the farm is still fragile. We would have to blow it up for two playoff runs with Vlad just when it's starting to be rebuilt. Tucker should be back soon, Yordan, Altuve, and Bregman are all hitting, Meyers has been an improvement, and of course Diaz. Get Chas going again and this offense will be fine with a 10-15% above-average offensive production from 1B in the 7th or 8th spot in the lineup.

The Royals just gave up a good 3B prospect and a draft pick for a reliever with an ERA over 4.00 who has 1.5 years of control left. So the reliever market has been set bonkers high early on, thanks KC.

Can't even remember the last derby or All-Star game I watched. If Yordan were finally in it I'd watch, but meh.

Don’t you have the hots for AOC as well? No. I just think she's pretty. Well if she is just pretty for you, then don’t open the big package I sent you for your belated birthday present. Just put return to sender. And you didn’t plug up the holes in the big holes in the wrapping around the container, did you? Not to self - Find where Taylor Swift next concert is, and make sure Travis is not with her….chloroform is so expensive now, than you Brandon!

Would anybody consider Keuchel at the league minimum? He had a 3.55 ERA in his 3 appearances in July.... Could maybe eat some innings for cheap?

Worst contract that the Astros are paying on right now: Lance McCullers, Jose Abreu or Rafael Montero?

Worst contract that the Astros are paying on right now: Lance McCullers, Jose Abreu or Rafael Montero? Montero isn’t close to the other two as much as I hate it. Abreu is just one more year of sunk cost. McCullers to me is hands down the worst. They kept him while saying goodbye to better more impactful players. Sure, it’s worked out not re-signing those guys, but they’ve had a revolving door in CF since Springer. His replacement, Myles Straw, was a dud. Peña has done fairly well replacing Correa offensively but isn’t the same captain of the defense as his predecessor. You can throw Cole into the mix as well. McCullers might just be as washed up as Abreu.

McCullers might just be as washed up as Abreu. McCullers is proving to be the most problematic. It just keeps on draining the team of having a valuable contributor due to that contract. But it was is not the worst advised deal at the time of the signing. Abreu's deal seemed ill advised at the time given his age, reduced power, and other metrics but there were other players who proved to age slower than normal so at least there was the hope that we could get one really good year and one ho hum year and then write the last one off. Montero however has a history of doing well and then blowing up. Why anyone would pay him to be a late inning guy on a long term basis is a real mystery to me and so his deal is the worst of the three, at least the worst advised from a GM perspective.

Changing perspectives a bit, how about the recovery that the Astros have made. I was positive that this team needed to be blown up and rebuilt. Though I am not quite ready to say that they are ready for prime time quite yet the near future does look promising with the injured players returning and the performance of the team as a whole. Abreu must of been bad luck because when he was gone this team has played some good ball. Turning around that heaping pile of cow dung performance of the first part of the year to where they are now is an admirable feat. I am happy with where they are right now and even happier to admit that I was wrong about them.
