4.56 xFIP, his strikeout rate is under 10 for the first time in nine years and his walk rate is a career worst 5.32. If you thought Pressly was stressful to watch this year...
Bryan King: 3.81 xFIP Shawn Dubin: 4.20 xFIP
Neris would likely not be an upgrade, even over the lower-end of the bullpen. I'm also not sure how the rules work out; it's possible that if we picked him up and his option vested, we would be on the hook to bring him back next year for another nine million.

I'd rather give Whitley a chance in the bullpen before bringing back Neris. That WHIP is scary bad, and if the Cubs and their losing record didn't want him...why would we?

Whitley has been good as a reliever. Not amazing, but good... He's definitely worth a longer look before the postseason. I really believe Scott and/or Abreu need a short IL stint to rest before the postseason with their heavy usage.

We just claimed Ben Gamel from the Mets and moved JP France to the 60-day IL. Gamel should be an immediate fixture in the OF, imo. He isn't great, but he's better than what we've gotten from Chas/Loperfido/Leon.

I have slept on my elbow every night for nearly 60 years, and it hasn't once swelled up. At your age does anything swell besides your ankles? Huhuhu

Yuli has been looking really good in AAA.... I wonder what it would take to get him back and send Dezenzo down for some more seasoning. That could be a pretty solid platoon at 1B with Singleton plus some veteran depth. Our lack of position player depth is a concern.

They keep trying to find better options, but all they do is strike out.

Reading Rome's article about the Astros OF situation today, and he points out what I mentioned last week, that Wilyer Abreu, who is having a possible Rookie of the Year season for Boston, was part of the trade for a few months of Cristian Vazquez. What I forgot about is that the Vazquez trade happened after Dusty blew up the trade for Wilson Contreras because he didn't want to give anyone playing time over Maldonado. That trade would have lost us Urquidy, who posted a 5.29 ERA in just 16 games last year and has missed all of this year. And Abreu would possibly be in LF for us right now.
When owners let themselves and managers make roster decisions, disaster often strikes.

Martinez doesn't strike out as many guys (although he was at a 9.1 K/9 before this year), but I have more faith in him as a long reliever. Same with Ferguson. Too many baserunners. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a major component of xFIP is based on their strikeout rates, correct?

It's still not what I would have done (although at least it shouldn't really cost us anything), but, on the plus side, Neris has actually been very impressive since mid-June.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a major component of xFIP is based on their strikeout rates, correct? Yes. More info: library.fangraphs.com/pitching/xfip/Seth Martinez might feel like the better choice because his ERA (end results) have been better overall. But we have to remember that that does not mean he has actually pitched better. Ferguson has walked 1.2 batters more per nine innings than Martinez, but this translates to like one extra walk every nine outings when you think about it. Meanwhile he's striking out five more batters per nine outings. Ferguson has a BAbip almost .100 higher than Martinez too. He's simply pitched much better. His stuff is better. His track record is better. Dubin definitely needs to cut down the walks, but he's also getting BAbiped. WHIP doesn't take into account things like that, since it's just walks and hits. Martinez is going to have a much better WHIP because his BAbip is low right now. Martinez is also posting a notably higher strand rate than his career mark. Everything about him is indicating regression is due. It may not happen, but you make the decision (usually) on who is pitching better and who is likely to pitch better in the future. Ferguson is clearly the best. You could make an argument for Martinez over Dubin for non-statistical reasons, it's closer there. Ferguson has a BAbip near .400 in his very limited sample with us. It's noise. His stuff is good and he's good. Not exceptional but good.

It's noise. His stuff is good and he's good. Not exceptional but good. But historically Ferguson has allowed a lot of baserunners as well. I just don't like relievers that put a lot of guys on base even if they have high K rates. The more runners you put on, the more likely they score on those "noise" fluke hits. That's my concern with Neris. I know that "pitching to contact" has mostly gone away from this era of baseball, but I still believe there is some value to that. Plus, I think Martinez' dominance against righthanders is very valuable.
