Hey thomas, I just read this on mlbtr:
“....Zach Britton will face live hitters during a batting practice session on May 15.”

Kelvin Herrera might be the Astros solution for closer. Rangers reportedly thought about trading for him in the off season. Herrera's first season in the majors was 2012 and he has never been below league average in any year. In fact he has a career ERA+ of 150. Not slowing down this year either. Only 1 run allowed in 10.2 innings. Herrera got 26 saves last year and he has 5 so far this year. Only blew 4 saves last season. He's held a 1.26 ERA in 22 postseason games. He's someone the Astros could feel confident with in October. He's a free agent at the end of this year and the Royals have no use for him. it would be senseless for them to hang on to Herrera. If Herrera replaced Sipp in the bullpen, Hinch would have at least 4 reliable arms to go to: Herrera, McHugh, Devo, Rondon. I think Smith is going to start throwing his fastball more and will be viewed as reliable by the end of the year. I am warming up to your idea of trading for Herrera. The Royals need pretty much everything and we have blocked prospects at most every position and some who aren’t necessarily blocked yet, but will be by the time they are mlb-ready and are; therefore, expendable. Seems like we would match up well with them and Luhnow has made deals with Moore before.

Trying to trade those blocked prospects for Herrera makes perfect sense ......if they want Giles, Sipp, or both let them go.

Royals would be improved by picking up Giles. Let them have a minors prospect outside the team's Top 30 too. who cares. Herrera will help this team lots.

Herrera has already played on a team that won it all in 2015. He pitched 5 scoreless innings in the 2015 WS including a 3-inning relief appearance in Game 5 in which he struck out 3, gave up 1 hit, and walked nobody.
He is the type of pitcher we would like to see with the Astros in the postseason and I think his teammates would be thrilled to have him.
People talk about how some players might get bent out of shape if Gattis gets DFA'd. I think the bigger question is how many players will get bent out of shape if he stays on the team. Adding quality players like Herrera will only help to reassure and inspire the good players on the team.

Something like Reed + Bukauskas for Herrera seems more than fair. Royals would have 10 or more years combined from those guys while the Astros get 4 months of Herrera. One of Reed/Bukauskas probably pans out for KC. The Astros would have first crack at extending Herrera if they want.

Pollock is the prototypical outfielder: he can hit .300, field, has power, can steal, and has a rocket arm. Blackmon would be a very close second.

Some FA ideas to consider for a cheap 1-year deal:
Yunel Escobar: .274/.333/.397 (98 OPS+) Matt Holliday: .231/.316/.432 (94 OPS+) Brandon Phillips: .285/.319/.416 (93 OPS+)

Updating Trades/Acquisitions Tracking List
or Wish List, or whatever we may wish to call it:
Yunel Escobar: .274/.333/.397 (98 OPS+) Matt Holliday: .231/.316/.432 (94 OPS+) Brandon Phillips: .285/.319/.416 (93 OPS+) Nick Markakis (7th in wRC+ among MLB outfielders as of today) Nicholas Castellanos (contract expires after 2019 season; 106 career OPS+ and running 130 OPS+ this year) Denard Span (FA at end of this year; 103 career OPS+ and 119 OPS+ this year) Charlie Blackmon Brian Dozier A.J. Pollock Joe Mauer (132 OPS+ this year, 126 OPS+ career - can play backup catcher like Gattis) C.J. Cron (contract with Rays expires after 2020 season; 118 OPS+ this year and 108+ for career)
Today I added Joe Mauer as a DH candidate. He's 35 years old, having an awesome year, and playing for a bad team that may not want to extend him as he will be quite old for a ball player by the time the Twins are competitive again (Well, that depends on a lot of things of course). I also added CJ Cron, although I don't know the Astros would want to take on someone for 2.5 years as there is a lot of uncertainty.
Anyone else to add?

I see A.J. Pollock on the list... I can't imagine there is anyway the DBacks would let him go...

Acquire pending FAs on losing teams: Jose Abreu, Kelvin Herrera, Zach Britton. Hopefully, mainly can be acquired with blocked prospects. Promote a top OF from the minors, and maybe Paulino. Keep Giles, unless you get good trade value...rather put him in 7th... Dump Gattis, Marisnick, Sipp.

One thing I noticed about Tyler White is that he has substantially improved last year and this year against RHP. He had always hit LHP well but was shaky vs righties.
In 2016, he was hitting .693 OPS vs RHP, then last year got that up to .879, and this year it is up to 1.000 exactly. To me, that shows he is someone you can put at DH no matter what the matchup. He has done a great job working out the kinks and ineffciencies in his stance, swing, and overall plate disclipline these past 2+ years. Davis probably still has some of that to do yet although I can't argue with the batting line he's put up.

I think the Astros need a LF... Marwin isn't that guy... He is a good utility guy that needs to play several positions each week... Davis or White can replace Gattis, and still get some time in the field, as well... If Gattis isn't going to hit, he needs to go...

They are in first place in the NL West... I think they would keep him, and get a comp pick for him, if it comes to that... Kinda like the Astros with Keuchel?!

New article out today on Markakis: "Nick Markakis must have read that, because he has looked like a Hall of Famer so far this year. Entering Sunday, Markakis, who is 34, was slashing .344/.428/.550 (all career bests) with a 169 (career-best) wRC+. He also appears to have turned around his play afield, too, posting positive defensive numbers (that is, UZR and positional adjustment combined) for the first time since the Bush administration (2008). Nick Markakis, in 2018, has been worth roughly as many wins as his 2016 and 2017 combined. First, we should acknowledge that Markakis has taken his plate discipline to another level this year. After double-digit walk rates every year with Atlanta, Markakis this year walked in more than 13% of his plate appearances. But he’s also cut his strikeout rate in half, down to 8.6% as of today. So he’s walking and not striking out. He also has hit six homers and recorded a career-best .206 ISO...." article continues at www.fangraphs.com/blogs/nick-markakis-is-somehow-the-best-hes-ever-been/
