Here's an article making the case that the Royals ought to trade Whit Merrifield. Does it make sense to dump Marwin and his .680s OPS in favor of Merrifield and his .800ish OPS? Both are utility players but Merrifield is younger and has more years of control. www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-royals-should-trade-whit-merrifield/

Merrifield is 29, so probably has peaked as a hitter. He probably has 4-5 more years of above-average plate production.
I wouildn't trade Bukauskas, Straw, and Kemp for him, but if they would take Alcala, Arauz, and Celestino, then OK.

Y'all are saying utility player like he doesn't play every game. He plays every game. Just sometimes in a different position. We could leave him left field if Tucker continues to suck and he'd be a full-time LFer with speed, a good OBP, and 10-20 HR potential.

Hard to say what the Royals might take in return for Merrifield. I was surprised at what they accepted in return for Herrera. I certainly don’t think that Merrifield has more trade value than did Herrera. The last rankings I saw had their farm system rated in the mid-20’s of all mlb farm systems. Their ML team is weak AND their farm system is weak. I’m thinking that they need several good prospects more so than a single excellent prospect if they want to rebuild their farm system more quickly. They may be willing to take 2-3 prospects that are ranked in the 15-30 range of the Astros farm system in return for Merrifield.

Merrifield would be an excellent acquisition at this time. Like you said.., if Tucker can’t cut it right now he would be a good choice to fill in at LF for the remainder of this season. He would not block Tucker next season, but would make an excellent replacement for Marwin.

The Royals are headed for a rebuild and don’t necessarily need Merrifield. The Astros are 100% buyers and are also not in the same division as the Royals.

Would you give up Bukauskas, Straw and Kemp for him? Yes. Right now. Your easy. Desperation for a trade, any trade, makes one foolish.
Value for value. A few lower level prospects that are blocked should be sufficient for the marginal increase in production.

Would you be happy if Tucker turns out to be 285BA, 15HR, 25SB guy?

It's not desperation. Merrifield is an immediate clear controllable upgrade that has value for us now and in the future, and I think you're overvaluing those prospects. I wouldn't start with that proposal to the Royals, but if it got up to that to get him? Do it. He can play any OF spot if necessary, he can help at 2B, 3B, and 1B. He's a better hitting, better running version of Marwin. We lose Kemp in that hypothetical trade proposal, but Merrifield is basically a better older version of Kemp. If Tucker shows he can play, then Merrifield goes into Marwin's super-sub role next year and he's still very cheap. Let Marwin walk.

Maybe Kemp can be the new Marwin. Kemp won't drag his ass like Marwin has done lately. He is a second baseman, but, not capable of SS or 3B, We would probably have to include Kemp in a trade for Merrifield.

Race has nothing to do with it.......we don't need a 20 million dollar left-fielder who can't run...period. Shin Soo Choo would be of no use other than as a left-handed DH and I would not pay him just for that. Go get an outfielder who can hit. His price tag sucks, but he’s patient, works counts, and gets on base. I don’t know about you, but seeing short unproductive at-bats is boring to me. Not as boring as paying $20m to SSChoo, and jeopardizing the salary space, leading to missing out on a productive relief pitcher or on extending one of our superstars.

Why would we want to pay Choo $20 million? He can't run and we need someone who can do something other than DH. Merrifield makes much more sense, although Adam Jones sounds good to me.

I just don't get the fascination with him. He's 29, below average in the field, though diverse. And while having a good season, he is barely above league average with a career OPS+ of 106. He'd be a nice journeyman pickup. But he's not the key piece you spend top prospects for.

He's also cheap for at least three more seasons.

Kemp with his Khris Davis arm is a liability in the OF. If the Royals and the Astros were to trade, being Merrifield is Royals primary 2b, Kemp's name should be apart of the discussions. Of course, the Royals would be giving up on a more proven, versatile player, so they will be asking for prospects as well. Thus, expect two decent prospects to be included in the deal.
