There have to be other good relievers out there besides just Britton that are available. I don't know why our team seems hung up on him.

Unfortunately when you're the only team competing for a trade target that has a top 10 prospect, and you've got 2 of them, it doesn't look good. If the Astros had someone top 20, 30 or 40 they could offer ranked between Whitley and Alvarez, then we might have a shot. But I just don't see us winning the Britton sweepstakes unless we include Whitley, cause there's 5 teams interested in Britton and none of them can top that in a trade package
Hope I'm wrong I hear you, but there's no way Baltimore would even fathom getting Whitley or Alvarez for a banged up rental. Yesterday's game showed why we need Britton and any prospect (not on the MLB roster currently) outside of those two should be fair game. Throw in some ready made players like Davis, Kemp or somehow Giles and Reed would be phenomenal. I suspect that some of the teams who are supposedly pursuing Britton are just trying to drive up the price the Astros will have to pay. No way do I think they will force Luhnow to give up Whitley or Alvarez.

Merrifield is looking better and better as somebody we should be looking at too...

It’s almost as if they’re trying to make lemonade out of the lemon attempt to get him last year. However, wasn’t Verlander the lemonade? I’m confused now.

I hate over-reacting but I think we need Britton. If the Orioles ask for Kemp or JD Davis somehow, the Astros should not be hanging up the phone. Unfortunately when you're the only team competing for a trade target that has a top 10 prospect, and you've got 2 of them, it doesn't look good. Hope I'm wrongluhnow wants Britton, but, I doubt if he wants him enough to give up Whitley to get him.

Am I the only one that doesn't think Whitley should be "untouchable"? We have a great window of championship-caliber teams this year and next. If we can get pieces to bring another championship or two right now, I think you pull the trigger even if it involves a top prospect or two.
I'm not saying throw Whitley or anybody else away for mediocrity, but if we can bring in a top player...do it. So many top prospects don't work out anyways.

Usually come trade deadline .. there's a top player available that's worthy of a top prospect. I don't think that's the case this year though with most of the available trade targets. That's why I think we should go big for someone like Realmuto if we have the blue chips to deal that none of the other contenders do

It would be a great tragedy to lose Whitley for a rental. Tucker too.

Luhnow is a smart guy. I am sure he learned from his lesson of last year in waiting on the O's to make a decision on Britton. Caused us to lose a couple of relievers, not that it would of mattered last year but repeating is harder than winning it the first time. And that was pretty hard.

I really think the Astros and the fanbase would be disappointed with Britton. Let's say he pithes in 10 games and sits out the postseason with a strained hammy or whatever.
Lots of good pitchers out there to choose from who are available at a decent price. Givens, Stammen, Yates, Ottavino, Fry... Vazquez would be expensive but I'd trust him more than Britton.
Maybe Luhnow is fooling the baseball world by pretending to have an obsession with Britton.

If Luhnow is trying to trick everyone into thinking that he is obsessed with Britton he is doing a good job of it.

Who's to say he won't start blowing saves right off the bat like Giles did when he first came aboard

I'm glad Luhnow is the GM instead of some board members. Does this mean you would give up Whitley or Tucker to rent Britton for the rest of the season?? Not worth it.

Luhnow is a smart guy. No way will he give up a Tucker, Whitley or Alvarez for Britton. Why on earth would he? The prize prospect that the Dodgers gave up for Machado is ranked #84 in mlb.com’s Top 100 prospects in all of baseball. Last time I checked Tucker, Whitley and Alvarez were #8, #9 and #51. There is certainly no more demand for Britton than there was for Machado. I could see Luhnow giving up maybe Paulino and some blocked prospects or some who will be Rule 5 eligible in December and Luhnow knows he won’t have space for them on the 40-man roster. No way will he give up Tucker, Whitley or Alvarez.

Alright, worst case scenario: Britton is traded here for one of our top prospects. Would that change your view of Luhnow? That's kind of a gray area I guess. Folks have said we shouldn't trade Alvarez, and Dad noted he's ranked #51. I think we're overrating him if he's "top". Brett Phillips was ranked #26 when we dealt him for Gomez, and the guy dealt for David Price the same summer was ranked around there. For all we know Luhnow may have decided already that Britton is worth losing Alvarez

If by “one of our top prospects” you mean Tucker, Whitley or Alvarez, yes..., it would change my view of him. He is a smart man and the team is not desperate for Britton. I trust Luhnow.

I'm sure if the Orioles are demanding too much, he will remind them of how little they actually got for Machado. He is not going to give away our top guys to rent a guy with a history of bieng hurt half the time. One name that I don't hear much is Iglesisus of the Reds. He should be high on Luhnow's wish list. Offer the Orioles Paulino, White, Reed, and Giles for Britton
