The biggest problem with metrics is that fans of the metrics believe the metrics rule all. If that guys BAPIPPITYDO says he’s a great player, by god, he’s a great player, and you pointing out his .100 BA and 50% SO rate just proves you’re old and hate new stats. Not at all. But most of the people using older stats ONLY use the older stats and think the new ones are magic and not to be believed or trusted. It’s absolutely true. You just don’t recognize it, because you do it.

Jeff Luhnow, re: Trade Deadline
Says the Astros are having conversations with 6-7 teams "about players that we like."
"There's nothing that I would say is going to happen today."
"We're hopeful that they'll be 1 or 2 moves that we can still really consider & potentially make."
Source says waiting pattern so it's looking like Nationals could be one of those teams

Altuve and Correa being injured at the same time should be motivation to get something done because the offense currently has that pre-2015 feel.

Idk but from what it sounds like is the teams they are waiting on are fringe play off teams who might throw in the towel sooner rather then later

This discussion is bordering on the retarded. No statistic should be discounted or disregarded. As long as you understand what each total or index represents and its proper context, it's silly to say to another fan "what I use or look at is better than yours." That argument doesn't even make sense when it comes to the complexity of evaluating ballplayers

10:00pm: Prospects Jorge Alcala and Gilberto Celestino are going to Minnesota in the deal, per Jon Heyman of Fancred (via Twitter).
9:54pm: The Astros have struck a deal to acquire reliever Ryan Pressly from the Twins, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (via Twitter). Further details are not known at this time. Pressly appears to be bidding adieu to his now-former teammates, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press tweets, so it seems that this deal is on the cusp of being formally announced.
Pressly, 29, has taken a big step forward this year after showing solid peripherals — but generating only a 4.70 ERA — in his 61 1/3 innings last year. Through 47 2/3 innings in the present campaign, he’s sporting a 3.40 ERA with an eye-opening 13.0 K/9 against 3.6 BB/9.
Better still, Pressly is earning just $1.6MM this year with another season of arbitration eligibility left to go.

I still discount OPS as the sole authority on a player's productivity

I don't need a bunch of numbers to tell me what to think. Then why did you say earlier you'd pay closer attention to wRC+ and you should probably learn more about it .. if you don't need it

I didn't say I would let it dictate my opinion of certain players. It can be used to form opinions but I am never going to solely rely on things like that.

Bear, you’re perpetuating a debate we all agreed was retarded. It's retarded cause Corch keeps chasing his tail in a circleDon't blame me because you are too dense to get my point. If you want to totally use stats to form all of your opinions of a player, that is your choice. I am not chasing anything, I happen to disagree with Saint who seems to let stats do all of his thinking. That is is his right, too

Then why did you say earlier you'd pay closer attention to wRC+ and you should probably learn more about it .. if you don't need it Bear, you’re perpetuating a debate we all agreed was retarded. You always waste time trying to debate someone who can't form an opinion without having someone else or a stat sheet tell him what to think. I never intended to start a debate. I let the subject drop more than once but Saint insisted on trying ot prove that Stassi is a more productive hitter than Gurriel which is NOT true. I notice Saint hasn't posted an evaluation of his boy's hitting tonight. As Blum said, "stassi is really struggling right now"....the problem is that he is struggling against mediocre and inferior pitching. Stassi is an adequate backup catcher and that is all. When and if McCann comes back, Stassi's chances of making the playoff roster are very minimal.
