We don’t need Murphy now that we have Brantley. 1. Sign Nelson Cruz 2. trade for Realmuto if Tucker is not involved. 3. Trade for Michael Fulmer or Zack Greinke I don't care if they trade Reddick, Kemp, Stassi, or White. They can trade all four of them if they need to in order to get something we need. I just hope they don't shell out money to bring Keuchel back.

Well, it's not like Cahill is some amazing pitcher. There are still other options. True... but for $9M that's pretty reasonable for a possible solid #4 or #5 SP. Any other suggestions on who we could sign at that level of bargain? He has #3 upside....but nothing much is left in FA, at least as far Velo + spinrate....

Any other suggestions on who we could sign at that level of bargain? Here is a list of what is left that I pulled off the mlb site: Starting pitchers Patrick Corbin (29 years old, 6.3 WAR) -- Signed 6-year deal with WSH (12/7). Dallas Keuchel (31, 3.6) J.A. Happ (36, 3.2) -- Signed 2-year deal with NYY (12/12). Charlie Morton (35, 3.1) -- Agreed to 2-year deal with TB (12/12). Lance Lynn (32, 2.9) -- Signed 3-year deal with TEX (12/18). CC Sabathia (38, 2.5) -- Signed 1-year deal with NYY (11/7). Anibal Sanchez (35, 2.4) -- Agreed to 2-year deal with WSH (12/20). Nathan Eovaldi (29, 2.2) -- Signed 4-year deal with BOS (12/6). Gio Gonzalez (33, 2.0) Hyun-Jin Ryu (32, 2.0) -- Accepted qualifying offer from LAD (11/12). Trevor Cahill (31, 2.0) -- Signed 1-year deal with LAA (12/20). Derek Holland (32, 2.0) Clay Buchholz (34, 1.9) Wade Miley (32, 1.5) Matt Harvey (30, 1.4) -- Agreed to 1-year deal with LAA (12/18). Mike Fiers (33, 1.4) Jeremy Hellickson (32, 1.2) Garrett Richards (32, 1.0) -- Signed 2-year deal with SD (12/7). Tyson Ross (32, 1.0) -- Signed 1-year deal with DET (12/10). Brett Anderson (31, 0.9) James Shields (37, 0.8) Jason Hammel (36, 0.8) Edwin Jackson (35, 0.7) Matt Shoemaker (32, 0.6) Adam Wainwright (37, 0.5) -- Signed 1-year deal with STL (10/11). Marco Estrada (35, 0.5) Francisco Liriano (35, 0.3) Doug Fister (35, 0.3) Bartolo Colon (46, 0.2) Yovani Gallardo (33, 0.1) Jaime Garcia (32, 0.0) Matt Moore (30, 0.0) -- Signed 1-year deal with DET (12/4). Sam Howard (25, 0.0) Martin Perez (28, -0.2) Shelby Miller (28, -0.2) Drew Pomeranz (30, -0.3) Miguel Gonzalez (35, -0.3) Kendall Graveman (27, -0.4) Chris Tillman (31, -0.4) Ervin Santana (36, -0.5) Yusei Kikuchi (28, N/A) -- Posted by Japan's Seibu Lions (12/3). My thoughts exactly. That is why I was somewhat disappointed Luhnow did not lure Cahill over here for just $9M. Which is a pittance in this market for a viable starter.

Dont think the talks went anywhere I think Minor would be better suited going back to his old role in the pen. He signed with the team because of the chance of going into a starting rotation.

Though his spin rate is not that great. I can’t figure that guy out. He can dominate on the mound, but he’s also very inconsistent. He wasn’t that awesome in the minors either. If you can buy low, go for it. If not, pass.

According to the chatter.
Astros wanna move Reddick. Period end of story but dont wanna retain money. It's not a big move him now thing but they have other fish to fry. They wanna keep Tucker to play RF. But they looked into Mazara as a Utility 4th OFer to keep the starters legs fresh like a 4 man rotation in the OF. This could be devastating news for the Jake lovers. Astros are also very reformed with trade intereast of Myles Straw and he could be apart of the Miami deal if it goes threw.
As I've stated before Astros really want Realmuto and some how do it with out Tucker that would be awesome news. But you gotta believe its gonna take Tucker to get this deal done and over with.
It's a hard line in the sand.

I also still think its Jon Gray and Micheal Fulmer unless the Astros swing Realmuto and Urena. In that case you gotta believe Tucker is in the deal as I stated earlier in threads Astros are thinking of expanding the deal maybe Brenson or Scott and somebody else said maybe a pitcher

I think you're undervaluing Kemp the way I did when they brought him up. He's certainly nothing amazing, but he has a little defensive flexibility and his on-base skills have value. He's a cost effective roleplayer. He is cost-effective,but, we can do better in terms of talent. He has a weak arm and must not be very good at second base because they didn't play him there when Altuve was out. I don't know that we have another guy besides Diaz that can play some OF and some IF while being at least an average hitter.

I hate to break it to you but Jake makes the most money he would be the gonner. Straw and Kemp dont even make a million combined If you want to win, you don't cut your best defensive outfielder and keep one like Kemp, who is mediocre at best, just to save money, Kemp made a little over $500,000 and Jake made $1.9 million. In terms of quality, jake is a bargain. I'd dump Kemp in a heartbeat to keep Jake or Straw. Isn't Jake going to get a raise from last year if we keep him though? He made $1.9 million last year.

We have all been puzzling over what Luhnow has on his mind about the starting rotation. Everyone in baseball seems to think that the Astros are in dire need of a starter except, that is, Luhnow. So what in the world does he know that we do not. So I asked myself what could that possibly be and then yesterday we hear about Smith's injury and another pitching hole gets created and yet still nothing, not really any static out there in gossip land about anything other than unconfirmed rumors. So what is it, then boom, there it was a different kind of idea that may just be what he is up to.
Think about this, we have Whitley, James, Perez, Valdez, Martin, Armenteros, and Bukauskas all ready or really close to being ready to pitch in the majors. All of these guys have a complete package of options where they can be brought up and then sent back down without repercussion. Whitley, Martin, and Bukauskas though are not on the 40 man roster and to do this they would have to be added and the roster currently has 39 players on it. Martes, Smith, and Rodgers are on the 40 man as well and Martes and Smith could be put on the 60 day disabled list and Rodgers could be cut to make room to implement this strategy. Also some of these guys will be limited in the amount of innings that they can pitch so a 3 or 4 inning limit and pitch counts would have to be used in a piggyback arrangement with two of these guys at a time taking their turn in the arena.
Basically that would make the fifth starter slot a rotating open audition slot for these guys. James and Valdez kind of did this last year and had success so why not expand it. If our offense is strong enough we might find ourselves having to outscore our opponents from time to time every fifth day but if the offense is strong enough, why not, this way we do not give away prospects and we have a chance to really see what all that vaulted depth can actually do.
Not saying I agree with this but it does make sense and is just far enough out of the box to be something that Luhnow would consider. If we do not find a trade that we like I would not put this out of the range of the options that are penciled in.

If Tucker is not dealt for Realmuto, then Reddick’s days are over. Nonsense, they're not going to pay him $13 million to sit on the bench or in AAA. His playing time may be lesser, but he'll still be around. He's still a solid player and our OF depth is limited offensively already.

The best SP options for our situation were mostly trade deals, not free agents. I'm not sure that any of the free agent pitchers we discussed as possible Strom projects were ever really anybody that we were that interested in unless they fell in our laps. Obviously they didn't want to overpay for Eovaldi or Happ (and good), and I don't think we expressed much interest in anybody else. Regardless of what we do about Realmuto, I expect a trade for a SP at some point, and it will likely be out of nowhere.

Better to let him play some and hope he returns closer to 2017 form; then trade him for whatever hole (pitching) we need during the year.

They really want a spot for Tucker full time, and Brantley and Springer are the other two starters.
