I would sign Keuchel to a deal with a declining annual salary with increased incentives. Average base salary of 18 for 3 years with an automatic vesting option based upon innings for a 4th year. He will go into February unsigned and his deal will become real complicated.

I rather forego re-signing Keuchel, and save that money in hopefully re-signing Verlander. I would hate to think the Astros are not competitive in their attempts to re-sign Verlander, because of money already to Keuchel....The same goes for Cole; don't forfeit 18-22M to Keuchel, focus on keeping the better pitchers.

So far, Boras seems to have him over-priced and he may have to settle for less. We won't give him a deal in the $20million range, I don't think. We won't, but Atlatna, San Diego or Philly could give it. Since MCann signed with Atlanta, I expected him to sign there.

Opinions of Keuchel aside, I wouldn’t mind him coming back even if at an overpay.

I would never in a million years want Keuchal back. He would hinder plans going forward. I bet his plan is to come back cuz no one wants him. At 8m a year for 2 years he is fine but nothing more he is to hittable.
Stroman and Sanchez as a package that would include Yuli would be a Great deal.
If we plan on trying to resign Verlander and Cole. I thi k the idea of that is really good. We can have Whitley replace who ever doeant resign. McHugh is a luxury

And FYI. I have heard there is a standing offer on the Table and it's really good. Not including Tucker, Whitley, Perez, James or Martin. For J.T. Realmuto
The fact he doesn't ever mention J.T. is crazy. Also the report on Mazara was also accurate and the fact the news on Reddick should be traded.
He never talks about that stuff. It's just this is what he thinks

They'll have to likely get at least two free agent SPs between this year and next anyways. If they felt it necessary, they could get Keuchel now and still go for Verlander next year. I don't think it's one or the other. I think Cole is a pipe dream given how much he'll command.

The Astros will make about 75 million dollars for 2018 with a payroll of about 190 million
Crane is ok with taking it higher if the deals make sense.
So to break it donw if we sign Keuchel for a contract with a 20/18/16 structure then it would only use 18% of the money available for pitching Verlander is the most likely to sign an extension and he would cost 25 for next year bringing the total to 43% of the available money McCullers will take up about 6 million and would be our #3 starter for 2020 bringing the total to 49% Two out of Whitley, James, Valdez, Armenteros, Martin, and Perez will be the 4th and 5th starters and cost us a little over a million bringing our total to 50% Osuna will be our closer and cost 10 million bringing the total to 60% of the total available for pitching We most likely will sign Elvis to a longer term deal avoiding arbitration for this year and he would cost about 7 million bringing our total to 67 million or 67% The other 4 mentioned as possible starters plus Deetz and Bukauskus will make up 4 more slots in the bullpen and that would cost us about 2 million or a total of 69% and then we will sign a of journeyman bullpen guy to round out the roster for 5 million and that brings our total to 74 million or 74% of the total.
That would leave us 26 million for Cole's first year of a long term deal. So bottom line, signing Keuchel for the kind of deal that I suggested would not stop us from signing Cole. Only Cole or injury will stop us from signing him to a new deal.

Brantley was a great signing. Chirinos signing was good, not much in salary or commitment .I wished for Cruz, but the Astros must like what they have in White (salary, team control, production). So far, White is streaky. I 'm noping for more consistency, He takes too many called third strikes to suit me. Pretty much every hitter is streaky. I want the streaky hitters with a 141 OPS+ and do not care for streaky hitters with a 97 OPS+. I find White to be a very good option compared to most players mentioned for DH. I like Gurriel defensively at 1B so DH looks like the perfect place for White. When Gurriel need a rest or we want to go to a stronger lineup, White can play 1B and use the DH for the hottest bat.

Opinions of Keuchel aside, I wouldn’t mind him coming back even if at an overpay. I probably wouldn't go further than the one year qualifying offer he rejected. Perhaps a second or third year below that as long as he meets some standard like innings pitched in those years.
I like Keuchel. I just don't think he's a 20M/yr pitcher.

I don't care for Keuchel but I do think we need a lefty in the rotation. (My 9 year old has a poster of Dallas in his room)

He isn’t worth $20 million a season. I’d say 3 years at $15 million per season. He’ll get more but he isn’t worth it.

Shoemaker had a lot of promise. I wonder what happened with him. Injury. I think he'll likely bounce back okay, but it's certainly a question mark and he's kind of a douche as well. I think there are better trade options. Edit: Disregard. I was thinking Stroman. I agree with you that Stroman is a bit of a douche, but Bregman is a bit of a douche too. I wouldn’t mind trading for Stroman. He was tough on the Red Sox last season and decent against the Yankees. His GO/AO ratio was 2.71 compared to Keuchel’s 1.74. His HR/9 was identical to Keuchel’s at .79. He missed time last season with shoulder fatigue and a blister issue and only pitched 102 innings, but he pitched over 200 innings in 2016 and 2017. If he is healthy in 2019, he should be due for a big bounce back. Luhnow has made several trades with the Jays. Just my opinion, but I think he could acquire Stroman without denting the farm too badly. Stroman won’t be eligible for FA until after the 2020 season. MLBTR is projecting him to get $7 million in arbitration this year. I would rather Luhnow trade for Stroman than to see him sign Keuchel to a 3-4 year deal.

Here is my gut feeling BOLD prediction.
1. EE to Houston for Josh Reddick and Joe Perez.
2. This is the Wild one but I've actually seen this one floated around on a couple twitters. Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez to the Astros for Tony Kemp, Yuli Gurriel, Framber Valdez, Rogelio Armentaros and Christian Javier.
3. J.T. Realmuto to the Astros for Yordan Alvarez, J.B. Bukouskas, Max Stassi and Myles Straw.
That's alot of prospects going out. 11 players/prospects going out. 4 players comming in. 21 million off the books for 2020 when it's time to resign Verlander and Cole.
If you get the Stroman Sanchez trade you protect your Rotation down the road.
I get it you dont like it. It's just there is some smoke out there.

Out of curiosity - what positive factors do you see in Aaron Sanchez? He had a good year in 2016 but his results in 2017-2018 were pretty bad (like, Mike Fiers bad) and his peripherals (1.56 WHIP) didn't suggest he was just "unlucky". Zips/Steamer might be optimistic about Sanchez going forward, but I would have to put him down for about 100 innings of 4.75 ERA ball in 2019. Framber Valdez could probably do at least as well as that. Sanchez isn't owed a lot of money so it's not like the Jays would want to get rid of him just to dump salary. I can see adding Stroman, but not Sanchez.

I guess the Phillies are not that stupid in spending "silly money". Not bending to Dallas' demands for a five year plus contract. But with big plans this offseason it is starting to look a little dim for their fans. Will the Phillies break. www.mlb.com/news/dallas-keuchel-rumors/c-297610496?tid=282421090Dallas and Kimbrel must be out of their minds if they think clubs are going to be dishing out long term contracts to pitchers late in seasons.

I'm not against a Stroman deal; I just don't care for him much. Bregman is also a douche. Astros management needs to tighten the reins on Bregman before his crap gets out of hand. Bregman is focused when he's between the lines. He has fun outside the lines. I don't mind that. In my mind, it's not a problem unless he loses concentration while during the play of the game.
He actually reminds me a lot of Biggio while on the field. He never takes plays off or fails to make a concerted effort regardless of the probable outcome of a play. I'm not sure why you're so concerned about his behavior. I'm not.

This from mlbtr:
“The Mariners have grown “increasingly confident” they’ll be able to trade designated hitter/first baseman Edwin Encarnacion before their spring training opens, Jon Morosi of MLB.com says (video link). Encarnacion’s market has picked up in the wake of the Twins’ agreement with Nelson Cruz, whose suitors are now turning to the former. The Rays, White Sox and Astros are each “involved” on both Encarnacion and Cardinals first baseman/outfielder Jose Martinez, according to Morosi.”
I would pass on EE. As to Martinez, I will be curious to see how his overall numbers are be affected by the inevitable tinkering the Astros will do with his swing in order to try and increase his HR numbers should he come to Houston.
