I have a feeling that a lot of you guys will be changing your tune on Correa when he comes back healthy next spring. I find it very odd how quickly some fans can turn on a cheap superstar player who suffers an injury. I love Correa. I just like Bregman more. I hope CC hits 60 bombs and knocks in 150 runs next season. I know you're a Bregman fan (I can tell by the name), but I guarantee you that a lot of fanboys on this forum will be kicking him right to the curb if he struggles next season. Just like they did with CC.

I find it very odd how quickly some fans can turn on a cheap superstar player who suffers an injury. If he comes back healthy and shows he can stay healty, I'll be happy to change my tune. The organization spent most of the season after Correa's injury being vague about the cause of the injury. In the beginning, he was "day to day" and that turned into about a six week stay on the DL. He came back and hurt the team offensively by piling jp K's, hitting into DP's, etc. He did do a good job at shortstop and showed signs at the end and in the playoffs of getting his stroke back. He has yet to prove he is worth a big contract on a long-term deal.

I agree with the order in which you value these players. Led by Bregman, Springer and the pitchers, the Astros made it to the ALCS this season pretty much without Correa; without a legitimate DH and with Altuve playing on one leg much of the season. I also agree with Saint’s assessment that we probably can’t keep all of Springer, Bregman, the pitchers and Correa. If we can’t keep them all, the loss of Correa would seem to be the least damaging to the team. Bregman could slide over to SS. Also, by the time Correa becomes a FA Nova may be ready to step in at the ML level. All of that said.., I still oppose signing Harper. He just doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who would fit into the Astros clubhouse/dugout long term. Picking him up at the 2018 non-waiver trade deadline to help the team overcome the loss of Correa’s bat down the stretch is one thing. Signing him to a 10+ year contract at $30 million AAV is another. I would pass on that. Those are basically my thoughts on the matter. I'm just thinking that Harper would improve the team even if he isn't exactly what we need. No doubt that Harper can be the big power hitter we need, and, could do for us what JD Martinez did for Boston. But, is he worth the money? His attitude could be blown out of proportion but he has often not given a full effort in the outfield and he hasn't shown that he can get along with his teammates. Of course, a change of scenery could change that.

Of course, a change of scenery could change that. If anybody is worth it, he probably is given his age, potential, and track record. He's just not worth it to us since we could probably fill all of our holes with the money it would take to get him. $30 million a year would likely get us both a DH and Catcher at least.

I find it very odd how quickly some fans can turn on a cheap superstar player who suffers an injury. I have no doubt that Correa will regain his form but only if he stays healthy. He’s broken his fibula in 2014, hurt his shoulder in 2016, his thumb in 2017, and had a litany of injuries last season. It’s become when, not if he’ll get hurt. He’s possibly better than Bregman when he gets it together. All we’d like to see is more injury-free seasons like 2015.

Castellanos would be a good get for primarily DH and occasionally LF. Younger than Cruz. What's telling to me is that Luhnow would have probably tried to retain Harper had the trade been completed, which means that he a) will at least inquire about signing him and b) he probably sees Tucker as a trade chip, possibly for someone like TJR.

BTW, does anyone have a realistic estimate of what our max payroll is? I think the luxury tax kicks in at $206 million next year.

Man, it sounds like Luhnow really did try to make a big splash with the offense last year. Imagine if one of these had worked out ...

Keuchel turned down the QO. That is what most of us expected. I expect him to sign with the Yankees. We need to be signing Morton.

Good with Correra. I think this is his proving year to be healthy and bounce back.
But again I think Lunhow will surprise us all and really add some power guys to this lineup.

I don't think Luhnow is interested in Harper so much as he needs a left-handed bat from somewhere with McCann and Marwin exiting. That's why I think Logan Morrison's got a good shot wearing a Stros uni next season. The new backup catcher bats left if I'm not mistaken

If we hear the shoulder is still bothering him, I would not be surprised if Morton retired.

Rentals are tough. I’m glad it didn’t happen because he was having an off year, and the only one playing like a star was Bregman. That can only carry you so far as evidenced by the ALCS.

I think most of us would of been happy to of had him at the time but as things turned out it is highly doubtful that he would of made the difference so now we are all happy to have Bukauskas Stubbs and whoever still in the Astros system.

The biggest problem that voodoo has in all of his trade/free agent bantering is that he just goes way too far. After going back over all that he proposed I have changed my mind and actually think that one of the trades actually makes sense for next year and long term. If the salary allocations are made correctly in the proposal for Goldschmidt and Greinke that deal works for both sides. It probably gives us our best chance of getting back to the WS this coming year and gives us Veteran leadership during the next two years while we are waiting on the pitching to develop.

Also Boston has 195 million dollars tied up in the contracts/arbitration allocations for 20 players. They will have to go over the salary cap or just not sign any big free agents this winter.

I wasnt the first to suggest this. Actually it's being talked about by Jeffery Todd and the other mlb trade rumor guy. Not exactly prospects or players going back cuz he didnt say who or what. But he did say it would have to be between 30 and 35 million covering Grienkes salary over the three years remaining. But a package of both togather would not only give the Diamondbacks Salary relief but would also get them what they need in prospects to maybe resign the guys they need in the long term. The suggestion of Reddick and White being involved would let the Diamondbacks still have a decent bat at 1B and Reddick would be salary relief on our end. This would open the idea of Adding Micheal Brantley and letting Tucker have the trial by fire in RF where his youth and athletacism are better suited. In the long run on the trade idea of getting both players you still have a strong Veteran Presance to help the youth guys comming up. More vets equals more advice. Would do wonders for a guy like Josh James and Forrest Whitley. Whom could be our 4 and 5 going into next season. The only issue is there has to be a contract or two going the other way regardless. I may have over stepped with both Reddick and Joe Smith. But both still have immediate value of some sorts.

I wouldn’t have a problem replacing Reddick with Brantley, but that compromises outfield defense. Sure, Springer is a CF, but he’s better in RF. His transition to CF was made easier by having such a capable defender in RF with Reddick. Brantley isn’t a great defender but is serviceable in LF. I hope that Tucker can hold his own in RF in a Brantley scenario. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be looking good out there. In summary, Brantley vs Reddick means you’d have to choose the route of offense or defense. At this point, I think Luhnow should go offense, but let’s not scoff at the significance of defense. There were quite a few times that sparkling plays saved them in the title run.

Correct. But you would also be looking at can Tucker do the job???.
And to add on to what you said. Sure Reddick has def and a mediocre bat.
But Brantley in LF could do his def a much better overall turnaround. Less space..
If you shift Springer to RF if Tucker cant hack it then you have Jake from state farm in CF. Which could negate some of the issues with Brantleys DEF. But again I wouldnt start Marsinek. I would leave Springer in CF and push Tucker hard this year especially in Spring training.

I may have over stepped with both Reddick and Joe Smith. But both still have immediate value of some sorts. When I sort through stuff I generally start with the money before going to other considerations. As I have pointed out a couple of times now we have 140 million tied up on 18 players either signed to a deal or adding in their projected arbitration settlements. So in your scenario of trading for Greinke and Goldschmidt you stipulated that Reddick and Smith would go the other way and by doing so would reduce the amount of payroll that we take on this year by 21 million dollars so the added payroll without considering any offset by the Diamondbacks would be 24 million and bring our committed payroll to 164 million for 18 guys and leaving us still needing another big bat, a catcher, and now another outfielder. So if we wanted to keep 10 million in space for July 31 adds then we have 32 million to spend. My choice under these circumstances would be Murphy at 10 million, Ramos at 13 million, and Granderson at 5 million. The only problem with this scenario would be if Tucker craps the bed and I do not think that he will, he will be very good in right field and better at the plate.
