James should be able to make 25 MLB starts this season. Armenteros and Valdez could probably make 25 starts too but it may be a good idea if some of those were at AAA. In general I'm still seeing ~150 innings the Astros need to hand to some new member (trade/FA) of the pitching staff. There was speculation a couple weeks ago that Buchholz was about to sign but then silence after that. If he's still available, he would be good for 100 of those innings. What I think the game plan revolves around is: Verlander 210 innings Cole 200 innings McHugh 150 innings Peacock 125 innings James 125 innings Valdez 90 innings Whitley 60 innings with the Astros Armenteros 80 innings with the Astros Martin 50 innings with the Astros
I know that this would add up to more than the number of innings expected of the starters but some of these innings would be in the bullpen in the piggy back situation. Baseball is starting to evolve into a situation where having starters going 200 innings is a thing of the past. The number of guys who get there each year is going down. Also we would only sign someone else if we see that we can use them beyond this year. I think that longer term we extend Verlander and McHugh and maybe sign someone else next year of Keuchel this year if his price is agreeable.

Considering McHugh only pitched 63 innings in 2017 and 72 innings last year, i think it would be a stretch for him to reach 150 innings this year. I've pencilled him in for 100 innings.
Peacock only threw 65 innings last year so it would be quite a jump for him to get up to 125 this year. While he might in fact reach that mark, I would rather only count on him for ~70 innings.
The way that Devo just fell off a cliff in July last year (and still looked bad in September, after taking August off) has to raise the prospect that the team might not be able to rely on him for much of anything this season.

oddly enough, the AL team that converted the largest percentage of its save opportunities in 2018 was... the Rangers. They were so excited to have a lead that late in the game...

Latest on the JTR saga from MLBTR:
“Last night, MLB.com’s Jon Morosi tweeted that the Padres are currently a bigger player than the Dodgers in the Realmuto market, though with a quartet of suitors still in play, it stands to reason that the perceived “favorite” can change quickly. Frisaro notes that the Rays and Astros have all but dropped out of the bidding at this point.”

CTH did a little piece today on the idea of Buchholz to the Astros: climbingtalshill.com/2019/01/31/astros-pitcher-buchholz-help/ I think he makes sense. Impact to the budget wouldn't be big and he would be good veteran insurance in a season where the team stands to rely on so many rookie arms. He probably keeps his ERA around 3.50 and gives 100 innings. Anything more than that is gravy.

Miley had a good 2018 in comparison to 2016 and 2017, both his ERA and WHIP dropped dramatically....but the ironic thing, his strike out rate dropped as well.

Still hoping the Astros can trade for Seth Lugo....
As far as catchers go, anyone against signing Devin Mosarco or Matt Wieters to a very team friendly deal?....their defense is bottom tier, but a team friendly contract for hitting wise would be low risk, medium reward....Or do the Astros stick with Stassi as the backup catcher (who is better defensively than these two + Chirinos)

Miley will be a situational lefty reliever, long inning relief and occasional starter, right?

Framber vs. Wade in Spring training I assume. Need a lefty in the rotation

Miley will be a situational lefty reliever, long inning relief and occasional starter, right? I can't imagine why he would be used out of the BP. He's been a starter for a long time and puts a lot of guys on the bases which is not a good candidate for success in relief.
I see him as a back up plan to take the fifth spot in the rotation which would free up Valdez to go to the BP or start back in the minors for a little more seasoning. He is a lefty that can be penciled in against teams who struggle with lefties. But this might take us out of the chase for another starter like Keuchel. While he had a shortened season last year, he has a history of giving rotation worthy innings.

could see yearning for Keuchel and his career 1.227 WHIP from the fanbase before all's said and done

I think signing Miley eliminates Keuchel resigning.

The way this season is likely to go, there will be plenty of starts to hand out among Miley, Framber, Cionel, and others.
Framber was looking mighty sharp by the end of the season. Remember the September game where CFM had to leave after 1 inning and Framber got tapped to continue the game? And he threw, what, 6 innings and gave up 1 run? He was actually throwing strikes in that game too.
This season we may rarely see a traditional five-man rotation. With the exception of the top 3, there could be a lot of mixing and matching for the other starts.
Miley should be good for 16 starts, which is 1/10th of a season.

I can't wait to find out about his spin rates and peripherals and how the Astros plan to improve his pitch selections. Interestingly, he improved last year by changing from his slider to his cutter. Pretty much the opposite of what the Astros typically do.

Solid cheap depth signing with minimal risk. Good move. I'd still like to see a guy like Buccholz or a multi-year #2-3 type for depth past this season though.
I feel like at least one more move is on the horizon.
