Good move by Luhnow. I believe Thornton would have been eligible for the Rule 5 draft this year if he wasn’t placed on the 40-man roster by Tuesday. Diaz seems like a better use of a roster spot than Thornton would have been. Another thing that comes to mind about why we traded for Diaz.........I wonder if they know that Correa's back issue could be worse than they thought and Diaz was brought in for protection at SS. That, and being the replacement for Marwin all adds up. I think he was a cheap replacement of Marwin, nothing more.

Correra being Correra we could have a capable backup plan for that. The fact of the matter is can Diaz hit in the playoffs like Marwin? We wont know until we make the playoffs again.... Again I ask Realmuto and Dietrich what do you think about that package?

The more I think about Grandal, the more I want us to have Realmuto. This is how I rank them based on their value and skillset and what it would cost to get them: 1. Perez 2. Grandal 3. Ramos 4. Realmuto I’m on board the Pérez train, but man, KC has worked him like a mule.

Sensible to part ways with Marwin for what he'll probably command. Marwin has had some great moments with Houston and I'll be sad to see him go, but he's replaceable (in fact, they just did for probably 20-30 million less). From what I've read about this Diaz kid he's probably a better hitter with not-great defense (similar to Marwin). Marwin has the familiarity bias with fans who've watched his every move for a few years and came through in the clutch a few times, but he's also an average hitter who has failed a bunch as well (and has a lazy streak). I think Luhnow made a good trade.

What y'all don't seem to get is that I'm not wanting us to bring Keuchel back either. I was just illustrating how I'd like that deal for us as well for any other club in theory even though no one else would. Mainly for the guy's durability is what it comes down to for me. His easy delivery is probably linked to that

Give them what they're worth up front, then let it tail off but give them a chance to make hefty bonuses if they deserve it.

I say this because not only can Dietrich play COF he can play 1b Dietrich would be an interesting add given the fact that we originally drafted him and he refused to sign for slot. That was back in the old bad days.

BTW, does anyone have a realistic estimate of what our max payroll is? I think the luxury tax kicks in at $206 million next year. I suspect that represents a close ballpark of the Astros maximum for the player too good to pass up (ie;Trout). But we probably won't go there quickly.

That was back in the old bad days. I'm nearly suggesting this idea due to the fact No one wants to see Tucker traded. Realmuto and Deitrich as a package would soften that up alittle bit I think. Plus Dietrich is very versatile and can play multiple spots which is what the Astros love

So my thought process on Realmuto is as follows. They want Tucker or Whitley The offer would be according a couple writers J.B., Martin and Alvarez. Here's what I think the thought process would be. First Whitley is not going no where. Scratch that idea off. So its Tucker who could bounce back and be the Bad A$$ like he was in the minors. Or You throw them 3 prospects that all three could be better then Tucker. So the dilemma is? I would rather trade Tucker and hope and pray atleast one of those three mentioned above was equal to just below or above Tucker. Yordan Alvarez may not even be a OFer in the long run he could be a 1B. But what if Tucker still struggles and never gets the idea of the Bigs? Value lowers. Again what if he figures it out and Mike Trouts it? I think it's more along the 1st one the the last one. So Trade Tucker. Get your Perennial All Star Catcher. Have Stassi as his back up. And when Stubbs is ready bye bye Stassi. I would rather have the premium postion (Catcher) then hope and pray on Stubbs to be a 3rd as good . That's my two cents. When negotiating, you never confuse the initial demand with a final offer. If we can put together a better package without them than other teams will offer, then they should be willing to accept it. Of course, some GMs let their egos get in the way with good business.
A cardinal rule of negotiating is to never let the other side trick you into negotiating with yourself which is what their insistence on one of those two players is actually trying to do. I doubt Luhnow will fall for it. He seems to be a pretty good negotiator and usually leaves the other team willing to do future deals.

Assuming that we can only make one significant trade this winter would you rather package them up for Realmuto or Kluber assuming the package is the same.

I still think we can get Realmuto without giving up either Tucker or Whitley by throwing in better mid grade prospects which would be high grade prospects on other farm teams.
But we won't if we accept the initial statements that they must have one or the other.

He's 5 or 6 years younger and plays the most important defensive position on the field. Kluber will be 33 next year and is probably on the tail end of his effectiveness.

Luhnow should put together a good package that does NOT include Tucker or Whitley for Realmuto. I think throwing in better mid-range prospects, as you suggested, could get it done. Don't give them either Tucker or Whitley. I don't think Luhnow will turn loose of either unless someone makes an offer he would be dumb to refuse.

What about J.T. Realmuto and Derek Dietrich for Kyle Tucker, Max Stassi and Derek Fisher
Then Noah Syndergaard For J.B, Tony Kemp and Brad Peacock
And a straight up trade Nick Castellanos for Cional Perez.
Fill what ever else you need or want in FA. I think Zach Britton will be here

I'm thinking they wind up with Realmuto (or as a long-shot, Perez) without losing Tucker or Whitley. However, it's still going to be painful to get him. I'd also project they get Cruz to DH. Have no idea on SP, but Luhnow will get someone, and that someone will probably be a player no one suspected.

One of the things that I think that most of us do not consider is the value that what we consider spare parts may have for other teams. For instance last year the biggest part of the return for Cole was Moran. So in that vein I got to thinking about what spare parts that we have that the Marlins or Diamondbacks would place high value on. Guys like Kemp, White, Davis, Fisher, Reed, and Martes have value. I wonder what the prospect value would be for White. Would someone rather have White or Alvarez, or if that is too high, White or Martin.

If Tucker stays, getting Cruz would be great. If Tucker and Whitley stay, that would make the Astros better than the Red Sox and the favorite to win it all.

The price for Realmuto SHOULD be less compared to last season due to one less year of control.
