Since ST has started, does anyone think Luhnow will see an opportunity to make a last second notable signing? Keuchel or Kimbrel... All I know is that Kimbrel has got to control that knuckle curve because last season he looked hittable for the first time ever. If he stays hittable, then either signing carries expensive risk.

If Keuchel keeps up this nonsense for much longer, he may well be prepared to accept a 2 or 3-year deal that Luhnow is OK with.
I don't see Luhnow forking over the cash for Kimbrell. There are nearly-equivalent relievers available in trade and by the end of ST it will be clearer where the Astros have a surplus of players who are trade bait.

Just a shortage of arms with sufficient innings to make it into the post season when it really matters. Very few could start for more than half a season without risking injury and technique breakdown from fatigue.

looks like decent changes of getting in today's game. yesterday they said there was a good chance of cancellation due to thunderstorms, but the worst of the weather has moved off into the FL panhandle. McHugh would start out on the mound if it goes ahead

Will be well worth watching how this unfolds. MLB has an agreement with the independent Atlantic League to test-drive two proposed rule changes: 1) Automatic ball/strike calling based on Trackman technology 2) Moving the mound back (not specified by how much) I'm in favor of change 1 but not change 2. Anyway, the reaction to these changes in independent ball will probably affect whether the MLB eventually adopts. them. Stats nerds will like the fact that pitch data from the Atlantic League will be available (I believe to the public) for analysis & endless hours of argumentation on the internet. www.baseballamerica.com/stories/atlantic-league-expected-to-add-robo-umps-other-changes-from-new-mlb-agreement/

I expect the fan reaction at those Atlantic League games to be very favorable re: electronic ball/strike calling. While it's not traditional, I think that if such technology had existed in Cy Young's or Babe Ruth's day, they would have eagerly employed it.
The current system gives way too much leeway to a Joe West or Angel Hernandez to cause an unfair result to occur, which is a big disservice to professional athletes and to fans.
I understand the height and location of the mound has changed over the generations, but given that pitchers are accustomed to the current mound and we're seeing 8 to 10 runs scored per game (not too many and not too few in my opinion), why mess with their muscle memory and make them adjust? Same for hitters; they will have to wait for a fraction of a second longer for the ball to arrive, so their timing will be off at first.
Pretty soon they will be debating whether to allow bionic implants for ball players. Manfred would probably support it because wouldn't the young fans like to see a 150mph fastball or a 700 ft home run.

uh-oh.
"Astros pitcher Josh James strained his quad. He is "not part of the mix right now," A.J. Hinch said. Hinch said is "probably takes him out of the conversation" for the team’s fifth rotation spot.

Does this change the thinking re: Keuchel?

If Framber is the other option, I'd prefer Keuchel.

Framber, Peacock, and Cionel Perez would probably be the guys in the conversation unless Luhnow wants to make a trade or get Keuchel.
Fringier options might be Armenteros or Rodgers. Who knows, one of those guys might seize the opportunity in ST and claim the job.
It's tempting to just slot Whitley in there but (service time aside) they probably want to keep his arm ready for the playoffs.

Julia is saying James might still be in the OD bullpen
“RHP Josh James suffered a right quad strain and is no longer a candidate for the starting rotation. He played catch today and Astros are hopeful he’ll pitch in enough games to be in the bullpen on Opening Day.”

Given the state of the division, Peacock as #5 should be fine through June. Then reassess the trade market and where the AAA boys are at, and make changes as necessary.

If they can get Keuchel on a 3-year deal for a reasonable amount, they should.
We're going to need the depth, especially after this year.

Theres still trade possiblitys qith the Blue Jay's in Aaron Sanchez and Marcus Stroman.
I would look that way well before Keuchal.

If the Giants whiff on Harper, they may turn their attention to some of Houston's excess outfielders. Maybe a pitcher could be had in return from their organization.

It would be the perfect spot to dump off both Reddick and Marisnick. Its Tucker and Straw time. I wouldnt Care who we got as long as money wasnt comming back. Prospects would be ideal.

Keuchel and Boras were idiots to think Dallas could get that kind of money, At this point, 2-3 years is about all he can get. He will go crawling to somebody for a job. Could be Luhnow is waiting him out.

Mikolas with the Cardinals just got a 4-year $68 million extension. Sure he's a year younger, but he also has only one proven year of MLB success. If he can get that deal, Keuchel should still be able to command a pretty good contract. We'll see. Boras probably aimed too high initially, but I still think a team will decide to pay Keuchel if there are any injury problems in ST. Heck, maybe us...

I don't think I'd pay him $18 million a year, but he's had enough career, and recent, success to warrant more than $18 million guaranteed. (At least based on prior free agent deals.) It's been a crazy couple of offseasons though so who knows what will happen. He's likely not going to be an ace again, but a sub-4.00 ERA and 200+ innings is certainly not a "BP" pitcher either. Heck, he pitched as well as, or better than, Verlander in the postseason last year too.

I agree he's not a BP pitcher, but soft-tossers usually don't age well (Maddux notwithstanding) and Keuchel is on the wrong side of 30. Whoever signs him to a 4-year deal will probably live to regret it. I don't think Dallas would give us anything over a 3 or 4 year span that we couldn't accomplish internally for a whole lot less money.

And yes, I sit on the fence concerning contracts because I don't know what I'm talking about. A lot of fans are in the same boat but their lack of knowledge doesn't slow them down in expounding on things about which they should remain silent.

I'm sure we could probably replace Keuchel's production with at least one of our in-house candidates this year, but I don't think we can replace Verlander, Cole, AND Keuchel's production with in-house candidates past this year. Two of those guys are going to easily top 20+ million annually after next year and we may not get them back. Keuchel would help fill some of that production at least, and give us depth for this year. Provided you could get him for a reasonable deal, of course.
