Mikolas with the Cardinals just got a 4-year $68 million extension. Sure he's a year younger, but he also has only one proven year of MLB success. If he can get that deal, Keuchel should still be able to command a pretty good contract. We'll see. Boras probably aimed too high initially, but I still think a team will decide to pay Keuchel if there are any injury problems in ST. Heck, maybe us... Keuchel gives up more contact than the usual starter. I’m sure it factors into decisions.

And yes, I sit on the fence concerning contracts because I don't know what I'm talking about. A lot of fans are in the same boat but their lack of knowledge doesn't slow them down in expounding on things about which they should remain silent. Then what's the point of having a message board if not to hypothesize and discuss? Your momma jokes?

If Keuchel keeps up this nonsense for much longer, he may well be prepared to accept a 2 or 3-year deal that Luhnow is OK with. I don't see Luhnow forking over the cash for Kimbrell. There are nearly-equivalent relievers available in trade and by the end of ST it will be clearer where the Astros have a surplus of players who are trade bait. I haven't read anything if Dallas has lowered his demand, but Kimbrel priced himself out of the market.

I can't believe Rick Ankiel is still trying to play big league ball www.mlb.com/news/rick-ankiel-plays-catch-for-first-time-since-surgery He was in Astros ST camp not too many years ago... The Cardinals might be on to something with how they are letting him work out at their facility even though he isn't technically an NRI and he doesn't have a minor league contract with them. Maybe Luhnow should invite Keuchel to work out with the Astros to help him prepare for the season. Getting back into the clubhouse might put Keuchel in a state of mind where he'd be more likely to sign a short-term deal.

It is a shame but both of those guys are reducing themselves to buzzards. Sitting around waiting for something bad to happen to someone so that they can swoop in and take advantage.

If Keuchel were invited to work out with the Astros at the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches (like the Cards are doing with Ankiel), with no commitment to a contract, it would provide an environment where he would get lots of encouragement from former teammates to just get a deal done. And also an environment where Hinch/Luhnow could talk with him informally without Boras being present to create doubt in his mind.
In the worst case, camp ends with no deal and at least DK got some free workouts in which will help maintain his value for other teams.

Don't look now, but the Mariners have a rising star 1B in their farm system named Evan White (no relation to Tyler).
If the AL West should have two starting first basemen named White, I'm afraid Occasional Cortex could have a conniption fit.

These guys are now at the point to try to save face on any deal they sign. It looks now the future FA's are looking for extensions to get the best deal they can.

Cerebral Cortex. The idea is that she only occasionally uses her brain. On second thought, maybe that idea is being generous to her.
