Stubbs with a massive bomb. I am pulling for Stubbs to make it so we can dump Stassi. But then who is your backup catcher next year? Pull for Stubbs so that we don't need another rental like Chirinos in 2020 and have two cheap controllable solid catchers with Stassi and Stubbs. We have control of Stassi for 4 more years.

Then you gotta let him walk. Js You need to think forward you sign him to 20+m then you set the chance of loosing guys like Correa or Bregman. So you risk that for possibly loosing one of them? Or not signing Cole or Verlander? I don’t think you appreciate how hard it was for the Astros to develop a bonafide star outfielder. They don’t grow on trees. It took a moderate contract just to land a complementary player like Reddick. It’s not cheap or easy to have a player who produces like Springer. Sure, Trout is a better player, but 29 other teams would want him too. Don’t toss Springer away if you don’t have to do so. Harder to develope a C then OFer theres always ofers on the market

That’s why I wasn’t all for getting Realmuto as some sort of desperate need for the Astros. I thought that Brantley addressed needs better.

Dietrich > Trout + Springer Last I saw, Dierich signed a minor league deal with somebody And is batting 308 currently with the REDS. But who cares a minor league for him would been very good. O well. Anyways like i said before if you watch the Astros they havent extended people with injurys in the past to significant deals. Especially guys like Morton who alot wanted back. I wouldnt have minded him fbut not for a three year deal or 15m +. Springer is a great player but you dont wanna buy out his Arb years. Wait it out. Three years guaranteed qould be fine optuon for 4th and 5th. Dont wanna get stuck with his contract if he goes down. Sorry thats me

But the Astros put there eggs in Tuckers basket. They need him to play everyday. Thats just that

It's the fact that he sucks defensively everywhere and doesn't have enough power to be what we need in a DH. If we hadn't already traded for Diaz, I'd agree that he would have been a reasonable pick-up on a minor league deal. And we only have this year and next left for Springer. Show him you want him now by buying out his prime years with a contract that shows your other players and fans that you want to keep this winning core together. Five years gets him through his age-33 season. He's averaged 28 HR 110 Runs and a 127 OPS+ over his three full seasons with solid defense. If he's even just close to that performance over the next 5 years than you got a steal at 18-20 million per year.

I prefer Stubbs-Chirinos.

I liked the signing of Chirinos for what we need, but defensively he isn't going to be what we need past this year, most likely. Plus, Chirinos is costing us almost $6 million for the year, and if he lives up to that contract he'll want even more next year. We could have both Stassi and Stubbs for half of that, and use that any extra money towards pitching. I copied this from a Chronicle article that delves a little more into Stassi's value defensively: "Baseball Prospectus measures pitch framing in a Framing Runs metric. Just three catchers had worse ratings than Chirinos’ -11.2.
Among those same numbers, Stassi sits behind only Grandal with a 13.9 ranking. Stassi’s 0.022 called strikes above average — averaging how many strikes his framing creates for his pitchers — led baseball."Stassi may never be the hitter Chirinos has been, but if he can keep providing good overall defense while hitting at least as well as he has shown during his 300 career ABs (right at a 98 OPS+ which is almost league-average) he's a very good backup if Stubbs can prove he is a starting major league catcher. And surprisingly, for the record, both Stassi and Chirinos has an OPS+ of 97 last year.

You can do much worse than an OF of Springer-Straw-Tucker if those two prospects can do close to what they've done in the minors.

I think Stubbs is a more crucial position player prospect than Straw or Tucker given what we're going to need after this year (or maybe even during THIS year). If he can turn out to be a solid defensive catcher with +OBP skills, he could be very valuable. I am confident that Stubbs will be a solid defensive catcher at the ML level. I’m not so sure about his bat.

VD makes me laugh trying to dump Reddick and Yuli while signing guys like Dietrich. Not wanting to extend Springer is just plain stupid.

Miley is looking like he could be a fine half-season starter while we wait for Whitley to join the big league club.
Also it will be nice that Joe Smith should be back around July/August to help with the run for the division title. Having some fresh pitchers (Whitley/Smith) then will be nice at a time when the other guys are starting to feel beat up.
Keuchel's situation is getting more ridiculous by the day. He ought to be preparing for his third spring start, and instead he's sitting on his ass. Well I'm sure he's working out and pitching to a scarecrow at least, but still... not the same thing as being in ST and throwing to Freddie Freeman. Olney says the Astros haven't even been talking with Keuchel the last few weeks. Then again I'm sure Luhnow doesn't tell Olney everything, so who knows.
Stroman has pitched 4 innings this spring and looking OK in spite of giving up 2 solo HRs. Probably Toronto keeps him till July but I wouldn't mind a trade now, especially when the Astros have some young guys rapidly building trade value (Tanielu, Dawson, Toro).

I didnt say not to extend. I said not to buy out his years and offer him a 3yr deal with options on a 4th and 5th year. 15m to 18m max a year. And he has to move outta CF to prolong his career. Protecting our investments. No way 5 yr no opt outs Sorry that silly

With Travis Jankowski breaking his wrist, I'm not sure how the Padres OF will be affected and whether it opens up any trade possibilities for the Astros.
They still have Myers/Margot/Franmil as their main 3 outfielders, and Renfroe is a pretty good 4th OF but his value is mainly at the plate.
If I were Luhnow, I'd really covet Craig Stammen and Kirby Yates on that team. If the Astros feel they have an extra outfielder or two and could trade an OFer for Stammen or Yates, that would be awesome.

Here is an MLBTR take on Keuchel's near term future:
Mike 2:59 Where do you think Keuchel finally signs? How much does he get in a one year deal? Tim Dierkes 3:00 I'd feel pretty good paying $20-22MM on a one-year deal. Phillies would make a lot of sense. Padres too. If I'm Luhnow I would offer him 3/$40M or 2/$30M. If he can get more money elsewhere, fine. If he wants to stay home and play golf all year, fine. But those figures are about what he's worth.
I got the impression that Keuchel felt upstaged by JV joining the team. Remember the speculation over who would pitch on Opening Day? Maybe Keuchel himself felt alienated in the Houston clubhouse and would prefer to work elsewhere.

Of the top 3 remaining FAs: Keuchel, Kimbrel and Gio Gonzalez, what do you think the chances are of Luhnow signing one of them?

is it possible to have a negative probability?

seriously there are a lot of options left out there but I do not think that Luhnow will go after any of them. My guess is that he will sign Verlander before the end of spring training and then keep his powder dry til July to see how the kids play out

Of the top 3 remaining FAs: Keuchel, Kimbrel and Gio Gonzalez, what do you think the chances are of Luhnow signing one of them? 35% it's not exactly likely (as in probability >50%), but Luhnow must recognize the shortage of reliable, quality arms and to that extent I'm sure he's ready to pounce if the price is right. Of the 3 you mention, Gio is probably most likely to get signed, followed by Keuchel, and then Kimbrel. I just don't see Kimbrel getting cheap enough for Houston.
