After Verlander and Cole, our starting rotation looks pretty shaky........McHugh, Miley, and  ??. The more of these spring training games I see, the more I'm convinced we are a starter short. Luhnow didn't get the job done. At his point, I'd pencil in Peacock into the 4th spot and go with a bullpen for the fifth. |

I got to playing with saber formulas today and threw the current Astros spring training numbers into them to see what comes up. The idea is that due to the small number of PAs a player gets in ST, his AVG and OPS may be wildly high or low and not reflect his true performance in the ST games. For example, getting robbed of a HR by a leaping grab over the wall could cost a player nearly 100 OPS points. Likewise, getting a couple infield grounders to find a hole in the opposition's minor league defense can boost a player's AVG quite a lot even though those plays probably would have produced outs in a big league game. The numbers below give a picture of what each player's AVG (xBA) would be if his spring PAs had been subject to the same batted ball luck that he has had over the 2017-18 regular seasons combined. This is for fun, not betting purposes........  |
