Astros are under $19.5M under the luxury tax threshold.... I would hope they can move Marisnick, to add $3M more, to have more room for mid season trades

I think Cole, out of him and Verlander, will be the tougher to resign. Will Keuchel sign with anyone by OD? I agree with you on Cole and Verlander. It would be nice to have Verlander around to lead the staff and mentor the young pitchers who are coming along. James, Whitley, Martin, Bukauskus, Bielak could all be in Houston by next season. Keuchel? Who dat? Whitley puts the ball in the Astros’ court. The only real incentive that Keuchel mainly brings to the table is in giving Whitley more prep time in the minors.

We can't count on all of those young pitchers to be major league-ready.

Apparently it's a 5 year deal for Bregs. Correction: It is a five-year deal. Third baseman Alex Bregman is in agreement on a five-year, $100 million extension, keeping him under team control through 2024.

I agree. This is like the Mets locking up David Wright when he was in his pre-arb years

Still have to pay him a $10M personal services balloon payment in 2022. Then at that time Ohtani approaches the big bucks? I guess 3 years qualifies as "a few", but I sure like our prospect of LT sucess versus this pathetic franchise. At some point Trout will also be so flush with cash, the desire for a ring will kick in. I am guessing in about 5 years. They will pay him $1M/yr. for 10 yrs. the length of his service contract. Welcome to the forum, Mr. Churchill.

Other Who knows? Somehow I don’t see Keuchel swallowing his pride and accepting from the Astros the kind of short-term, lower than-than-QO deal he is likely to have to settle for at this point.

I think DK ends up with the Braves (or whichever team loses a starter to injury)

I was pro-Keuchel for a 1 year deal, with a 2nd team option...but listening to others here, Astros are just as fine as for waiting to see what their needs are come trade deadline.

Real irony, and funny as hell would be if Lihnow offered him QO plus one dollar.

The extension he turned down of 5-years $90 million is going to haunt him forever.

The extension he turned down of 5-years $90 million is going to haunt him forever. unless he didn't want to be here. I think he let his agent convince him of things that weren't so

The extension he turned down of 5-years $90 million is going to haunt him forever. I hope Springer rejecting the arbitration year bypass contract won’t haunt him, but he’s much more likely to net a good deal in free agency than Keuchel (if George is not re-signed here).

I mainly would like Keuchel here as a consolation prize if Verlander and/or Cole bolt in free agency.

Eloy Jimenez , who has never played in an MLB game, just got a $42.5 million 6-year deal.

Of the top 3 remaining FAs: Keuchel, Kimbrel and Gio Gonzalez, what do you think the chances are of Luhnow signing one of them? Lookin like Kimbrel to Milwaukee

Eloy Jimenez , who has never played in an MLB game, just got a $42.5 million 6-year deal. I'm having a difficult time seeing the upside for the White Sox on this one. That's a ton of security they're offering. Without the contract the team is only obligated year-by-year. A career-ending injury and you just cut the player loose. Plus, the first three* years of service time are at minimum wage. I don't see them as saving all that much money through his arb years with this deal. Certainly not enough to put themselves on the hook for 42 million right now. What am I missing? * yeah, super-2 blah, blah, blah

It only makes sense for the White Sox if Eloy's a superstar. It's like the Astros deal with Jon Singleton

I think I remember that it was KevinBass who reliably informed us that 1) the Astros would never win under Crane and 2) he would never spend money. I think there are some still on this board who questioned his money habits as well. Okay then.
