He might come and plant it in your garden. Just think if Bozo wins the Presidency it will become a reality. I'll assume Bozo is Beto

Pence made the Rangers. He actually had a really good ST even given the semi-uselessness of ST stats. He appears in really good shape and his new and improved swing and baserunning has been excellent. I'd like to see him have a couple more good years. He's in striking distance of 2000 Hits and 250 HR. Only 120 players in the history of the game have achieved those marks, and even less when you throw in 100+ SBs. Pence really hit the Astros organization at the ultimate wrong time. He was really good early on, and think about it...... How much better his stats would have been if he hadn;t been surrounded by deadwood in the lineup early in his career. Completely agree. I believe Pence has been an underappreciated player for much of his career. Until his health issues in 2015, he had this average yearly line: 23 HR 86 RBI 84 Runs 13 SB .284 AVG .809 OPS (119 OPS+) 3.4 WAR Eerily close numbers to Andre Dawson's career average full-season: 24 HR 87 RBI 76 Runs 18 SB .282 AVG .812 OPS (122 OPS+) 4.0 WAR Granted, Dawson did it for longer and won an un-deserved MVP, but still similar.

I bet it reaches at least $125 million for 5-years. Maybe even with an option year additionally.

Still a bargain if Harper is a benchmark. (IMO)

Still a bargain if Harper is a benchmark. (IMO) Debatable. It'd be interesting to see what Luhnow offered if we were in on negotiations. If it turns out that all of this winter's trade talks were punctuated by Tucker being untouchable, the kid's gonna have a lot to measure up to

The Aussie guy must have been when I was on sabbatical before joining this board. He sounds like Waastro. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse than Waastro. Waastro was just stupid...this dude was profoundly stupid, and a whiner. I remember Aclotruveera (the Aussie guy) saying he had been a MLB fan for something like a year or so at the time he joined the old message board. In spite of that he imagined himself some kind of expert on the game and would talk down to others on the board. i wish i could remember the wording of my post when I compared him discovering baseball to the Aboriginal guy finding the coke bottle in the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy. That was one of my better efforts.

A very true statement, what was more puzzling was how the Phillies unloaded Hunter so fast. He was the key ingredient to those Giant WS wins.

No one talking about the steal of a deal the Rays got for the CY winner. Okay then. Let's talk. My opinion: It's a great deal from Blake Snell's perspective. Why? I can sum it up in two words: Financial Security. From the Ray's perspective, they've assumed some risk. In return they've locked in a reasonable price for a pitcher who might be an ace. The Rays are in a better position to suffer the downside than Blake is, if he didn't have the contract. By the numbers:Blake has over two years of ML service but not enough to qualify as a Super-2. That means this year, he would have been making minimum wage. Without a contract:2019: minimum wage (1/2 million) 2020: First Arb 2021: Second Arb 2022: Third Arb 2023: Free Agent! How much would he have made without a contract? Hard to say. IF he remains healthy and IF he continues to pitch at a level close to his 2018 performance he would indeed rewarded with some decent salaries. But make no mistake ... salaries for arb player fall far short of what the free agent market will pay. Especially in the first arb. And IF he has a career-ending injury or the wheels fall off and his performance suffers, he wouldn't make squat. Worst case, the Rays would just not tender him a contract this winter and no one else would pick him up. With this contract:2019: $4 million (raise to $1 million plus a $3 million signing bonus) 2020: $7 million 2021: $10.5 million 2022: $12.5 million 2023: $16 million (Can increase up to $2 million based on top 3 Cy Young award finishes) Even with the CYA bonus, the 2023 salary pales compared to what he might be able to earn as a Free Agent. But the key here is that the $50 million is guaranteed. The only way he doesn't get paid is if he does something absolutely stupid and gets himself thrown out of baseball.
In my opinion, Blake Snell was smart to take this deal. YMMV

In my opinion, Blake Snell was smart to take this deal. YMMV There is an old saying "Never walk away from your first chance to make a fortune". 100 million dollars qualifies as a fortune. It is a good deal for both sides imo as he does not have a track record of consistent performance.
