At the end of his career, he will still have more years with Detroit than Houston, but how cool would it be for him to go into the HOF as an Astro. Not cool at all. Respectfully, Invader from the North I feel your pain. Every Astros fan on earth grimaces a bit every time they see a "T" on Nolan Ryan's cap. (on his Cooperstown Plaque) Again, even with the fact he played more seasons here (9) than at NYM, LAA, or TEX. Plus he was born a 100 miles or so away (Refugio) and lives 30 miles from here (Alvin)

you spewed so much crap that you have forgotten most of it. you have been wanting to let Springer go.........idiot I have said not to sign him to a rediculas contract like some of you want. Change postions aswell. Jock strap sniffer you have nothing tnat requires a jock strap..moron. Compared to some money being tossed around, we could probably keep Springer on a reasonable contract.

The top 5 starting pitchers each have long term contracts or extensions above $30M/yr. Even though entering his age 37 year in 2020, Verlander has the track record to be paid accordingly second and fifth Cy votes the last 2 years. There is some premium for taking a short term contracts and $3M doesn't sound unreasonable. I'd personnaly like to get a rolling option at the end of each contract for an additional $33M each year which vests with a top 5 vote in Cy. That way, he can play as long as he is a top performer or the Astros can exercise the option if they think he's out of the top 5 for a reason that is worth the price. I'm willing to forgo Cole and/or Springer to do this. I suspect that Cole's choice of Agents makes him the last piece of any puzzle looking towards the future. Boras is great for a few and not for more. He makes enough on the few that he doesn't concern himself with the others (Keuchel, etc.) Boras screwed Keuchel.

Yeah, to the point of perching under an underpass holding a sign.

I have been of the opinion for a long time now that Cole and Springer would not sign an extension. We most likely would want to keep them but I just do not see it happening. Getting Bregman structured the way we did will allow for some flexibility in the later years of his deal, so we may be able to get something done with Correa next spring and by then we should have solid indicators of whether his back will tolerate a full season. After him I really do not see us adding to the core until some of the kids prove themselves up. I’d rather have Springer than Correa. Correa is usually the first to celebrate but the last to contribute. DITTO

Any bets on whether Bora$$ has Keuchel on Call Blocker? I'm sure Boras has a trained psychologist on staff to work with disappointed clients. He certainly has a high demand for that position in his company.
But Boras strikes me as a man who blames his clients for following HIS advice when it doesn't work out.

Kuechel has to be staining the BVDs right now. Luhnow / Crain are opening their checkbooks for those who play nice, and there are two MLB ready bad ass pitchers ready at Round Rock.
I love movie metaphors..... and right now it is.....Sell Mortimer Sell!!

And he was the owner of the Hooks (affiliated with the Astros) at the time of his induction to the HoF. The only things that seem to be reasons why he'd make that choice is because the Rangers offered him a contract at an age where other teams were hesitant. And he did make more money in his short tenure as a Ranger than he did as an Astro.

You are right, the Braves are brave. Many of us are really atuned to what I call "trends" in what is pitcher efficacy. And that trend isn't good. We don't know what ATL is offering, but if it is anywhere he and his agent's asking price....... I'm betting it won't be worth it.

The free agents this off season didn't look on what happened to Grandal early, turning down the Mets 40 mill offer, then ending up what summed up to a qualifying offer. Now we do see a move where players are now jumping of extensions, which now looks like the new wave.

Only that he's asking for a 5~6 year deal. Thus far, that seems to be the deal-breaker for possible suitors.

Now we do see a move where players are now jumping of extensions, which now looks like the new wave. You're right. That does seem to be the flavor of the month. And it makes sense. Some risk assumed by the team but since they're amortizing the risk over a significant number of contracts they are in a position to absorb a possible loss in exchange for a discount rate. Think of it in the same terms as underwriting insurance policies. From the player perspective, leaving some money on the table is a small price to pay for long-term security. Win-win.

Not knowing the logistics of MLB contracts, with extensions how much of the middle man profit AKA agents lose out on the deal.

If this is true, the article basically states we have (again if true) paid the highest annual salary for a pitcher in MLB history. (2/$66M) 33 per year.

And appeared in the Refugee Camp 6 hours ago The headline was old, but the article was new. The article stated that a deal had been reached for 2 years and $66M as anticipated earlier when the headline was made as part of a prior article.

Not knowing the logistics of MLB contracts, with extensions how much of the middle man profit AKA agents lose out on the deal. That's an excellent question and the answer goes a long way to explaining why some agents are very hesitant in having their clients sign extensions rather than going to free agency and cashing in on a possible bidding war. The loss an agent suffers due to an extension is proportional to the amount left on the table by the player. They get the same percentage whether it's an extension or a free agent contract. So obviously they'd benefit more by getting their slice from a larger pie.

He’s my 4th favorite of the Big 4. I won’t go as far as saying he’s an absolute non-contributor, but out of the main four position players, he’s the least likely to carry the team. Twenty-nine other teams would kill to have him, but the Astros have the luxury of not needing him as much.
