Brady Rodgers vs. Max Scherzer
Rodgers has only pitched in 5 big league regular season games (all in 2016), including 1 start and 4 relief appearances. It would seem that if he is ever going to emerge as a viable MLB piece, at age 28, he better get about doing it this season. With only 2 starters likely to approach 200 IP this year, the Astros may well need to spread the 162 starts among 9 or 10 different guys. Maybe Rodgers could help the team at some point with a few of those.
Rodgers first cracked AAA in 2013, so it's been a looooooong time for him bouncing around the upper minors (of course one of those years was lost to TJ recovery). Nice to have a depth piece with a career 3.65 ERA at AAA but I'm sure Rodgers would like to become a full-time big leaguer so he at least has a chance to earn a nice paycheck in a few of his arb years (starting 2021). Otherwise he could end up having labored away in the minors for nearly a decade with peanuts to show for it.

If the Astros are gonna "Take It Back" this year, they better be hard core...
Hinch revealed a few of the guys slated to play in today's game:
C Stassi SS Diaz OF Fisher OF Straw OF Tucker DH Marisnick
and the implication was the others will be pure minor leaguers who have never touched MLB.
Let the baseball begin

Something to pay attention to in Marisnick's PAs:
"To improve his roster chances, the 27-year-old is working with new hitting coach Alex Cintron, after he posted a .674 OPS and a 35.9 K% in 2018. In the past, Marisnick's first move was back, causing him to be underneath pitches. According to Hinch, that is what's contributing to his high swing-and-miss rate and low batting average. We'll get to see the new stance beginning Saturday, when Marisnick is scheduled to start at designated hitter in the Astros' spring opener." (CBS Sports)
It seems like every spring, someone on the team declares that Jake has figured out his swing... I guess traditions have their place in baseball.

Jake has too many holes in his swing for patch work. He is a player that gets lucky once in a while that wood contacts ball.

The velocity on Rodgers' fastball should be something to watch today. Prior to TJ surgery, he was hitting 92, but there have been press reports of him hitting 95 since his return.
Maybe Rodgers can be one of those guys who, like Josh James, comes out of nowhere and contributes to the big league club.

Who else could have Gattis in a three week stretch go from being DFA'd, to making the All-Star team, to then being again thrown under the bus.

Won't know for sure until game time, but mlb.tv's advertising suggests they will be streaming the game live for free at www.mlb.com/live-stream-games/

Been a while since we've seen one of these Hinch has put the camp's 3 fastest runners hitting next to each other. Watching those guys fly around the bases would be awesome. Also we may get to see Toro and Alvarez today. Two guys who might be up at MMP before we know it.

Well Springer has homered in the season-opening AB of both the 2017 and 2018 seasons... I guess he gave Jake some tips on how to lead off for the year.

This Diaz has some speed. 1st to 3rd is about right for him on that hit.

what the hell was Diaz doing?
Scherzer was having such a long inning too, nearly loaded the bases there had Diaz not lost the plot.

Tucker would have had a successful steal there if Diaz had been able to keep his head in the game.
Statcast may say Tucker doesn't run well, but I'm skeptical of that assessment because he managed to steal 20 bases last year and only got caught 4 times. And deserved a SB there against Scherzer.

I kinda sense Altuve would have snagged at least one of those grounders through the infield. Tanielu is showing why he won't be in the majors any time soon.

Tanielu was like a magnet for the baseball that inning.

I'm a bit disappointed in Nationals announcers and terrible graphics.

wish their broadcast would show us pitch velocity. wanna know where Rodgers FB sits.
Looks like Scherzer may not finish the inning, over 30 pitches already and walked the leadoff runner. come to think of it, he nearly walked the same guy last inning too.

especially if Marisnick replaced Tucker in RF, that would be one incredibly fast outfield. ought to be able to catch up to about any fly ball.
But Hinch wanted Marisnick to DH today

That was a pretty good performance from Rodgers. Good movement on the breaking stuff and the FB looked sharp, maybe Astros twitter will tell us about his velocity at some point.
But with a regular season level of infield defense, he probably gets out of that 1st inning scoreless and only throws about 30 pitches over 2 innings.

If memory serves correct, Marisnick used to hit leadoff in 2014 or 2015 before Springer got that job. Been a while since we've seen Marisnick as the first batter up.
