With the way some of our pitchers on the ML team are sucking, I wonder if Bielak or/Javier might get called up after the PCL playoffs are over. Both guys walk too many, but Javier’s ability to limit hits and miss bats could come in handy. In his last 10 games he has pitched 41.2 innings. He has walked 21, but allowed just 20 hits and struck out 78. Considering the way Devo and Biagini have pitched, there is no way that I want either of them on a playoff roster. I would like to see Javier called up and used out of the bullpen the last half of this month. If he is successful, put him on the playoff roster.

I know Miley's season wide stats are great, but after the last two outings, there is no way I would put him in a post season game with the game in question. Begs to question, would a hungry AAA player with some heat bring more to the table in October.

I hated to lose the guy.

I have been advocating bringing Javier and Abreu up since mid August. Abreu is up, after the playoffs we need Javier to get a shot so that we can take a look at what we have with both of them before the end of the year. Also see if there is a little lightening in the bottle.

Those are the ‘pecker’s 3 best SPs. I like their chances of winning the Carolina League championship.

Per the media notes at the Wilmington website, Astros #29 prospect Luis Garcia will be the starter for Fayetteville in tonight’s game to decide the Carolina League championship. He had a good start the last time he pitched against them on August 7. He went 6 innings, allowed no runs on 2 hits, walked 3 and struck out 10.
Shawn Dubin will also be available to pitch. He last pitched on 9/8. In his last 4 games he has pitched 24 innings and not allowed an earned run, while giving up just 6 hits, 4 walks and striking out 32.
Hopefully the ‘peckers’ offense will wake up and score some runs after losing 2-0 yesterday.

"The Astros are sending slugger Colton Shaver to the Arizona Fall League to work as a catcher, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports (subscription required). Houston’s 39th-round pick in 2017, Shaver ascended to Double-A this season despite that lackluster draft status, and his power and walk rate were hard to overlook. While Shaver’s average suffered because of a 32 percent strikeout rate, he still hit .223/.357/.500 with 15 home runs in an extremely pitcher-friendly Texas League. Shaver has played primarily first base in the pros and was a frequent designated hitter in college at BYU, but he played catcher up until college and approached the Astros about working at the position this past spring. He caught 29 games in the minors this season and will attempt to continue the transition in the AFL. Houston’s system is thin on catching prospects, so a successful transition would be a notable boost for both Shaver and the Astros organization." olpapa - What do you think of this?

I think it is a good move. I had noticed that he was playing some catcher at Advanced A Fayetteville. I want to say that the roster at the Fayetteville website listed him as a third baseman. I checked his CS % once a while back and if I recall correctly he was throwing out 25% or so of runners attempting to steal at that time. Not bad for a guy trying to transition to the position. Haven’t checked to see what his final CS% was.
I just checked and Shaver ended up throwing out 26% of runners attempting to steal combined between Advanced A and AA. FWIW, I don’t know how range factor is calculated for catchers nor do I know how relevant it is, but Shaver’s RF at catcher in AA was a 13. For comparison Stubbs had a RF of 9.11 at AAA this year. Stubbs is one of the more athletic catchers I have ever seen at any level.

They talked about how most of the "experts" had the system falling fast. The author of the story did not feel the same way. He said that the arms in the system were going to rebound next year and we would be as surprised by the development of some of this year's draft picks next year that will mirror the development of Toro this year. Let's hope this dude knows what he is talking about and not just sipping the koolade.

Just looking at the box scores and stats, it looks like we have several pitchers that were at Fayetteville this year who have potential. They lost the Carolina League finals, but it sure wasn’t the fault of the pitchers. They allowed just 10 runs in the 5 game series. I am interested to see how Nivaldo Rodriguez, Luis Garcia, Shawn Dubin, Jojanse Torres and Jeremy Pena handle the transition to AA next season. Barring injury, I think Bryan Abreu and Cristian Javier will be in Houston this time next year. Maybe Brandon Bielak too.

I wonder if Stubbs is too athletic for catcher and they are pulling a Biggio to keep him from having too short a career. I guess baseball still has it's assumptions about catchers needing to be big guys.

I guess baseball still has it's assumptions about catchers needing to be big guys. Marshall, I think you will enjoy the article at the link below. You, txheat and I....maybe others can remember watching Johnny Bench and Ed Hermann play ball so we may find the article more interesting than some of the younger folks. The article is about Garrett Stubbs and was published when he was a senior at USC. I found it very interesting that former MLB catcher Ed Hermann started working with Garrett, teaching him how to play the position when Stubbs was just 9 years old. Hermann also worked with CJ.., Garrett’s younger brother who is also a catcher in the Astros minor league system. www.latimes.com/sports/usc/la-sp-usc-baseball-garrett-stubbs-big-impact-20150528-story.htmlHere is a 2015 article on Garrett and CJ Stubbs. You may enjoy this one too: www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sdut-usc-torrey-pines-baseball-stubbs-cj-garrett-2015apr20-story.html
