Been needing this kind of game......maybe it will jump start this offense. Great job by Keuchel and Springer gets SIX hits.........great game all the way around. Even Gattis had a hit.

I feel bad for Sipp. Two doubles on fly balls that Fisher and Marisnick should have had. His batting avg against is very low and that should translate to a low ERA but between spotty defense and BABIP luck, he always seems to get the shaft. He's no Tom Seaver but he's also not as bad as his ERA makes him seem.

That finally puts 7 Astros hitters over the .750 OPS line. Not many teams have that many above-average hitters. Amazing the Astros have done that in spite of their overall struggles.

An offensive explosion by Springer and the Astros.
6 for 6 is incredible.
Now they face Manaea. Lance needs a good outing.

It's tiring getting one's hopes up after the offense has a game like this I don't mind them being streaky if they end up in 1st place and get that hot streak in the postseason. It'd be nice to see some consistency 3-4 nights in a row like last year

It's because nobody has a GREAT OPS. Correa has hovered around the high .800s but that's it. Altuve/McCann the low .800s (and both declining). Last year we had 9 over .800 with 3 over .900.

Well I turned in last night with the ‘stros up 11-0. I see the bullpen didn’t find a way to blow the game.

No, but our outfield defensive specialists decided to phone it in during the 9th.

George 6-6 in a nine inning game. I’m thinking that is probably more rare than hitting for the cycle.

We can all feel fortunate to have seen Springer's 6-for-6 game yesterday. Most of us were not old enough to see Joe Morgan's similar feat back in 1962 and I doubt I'll get to see another Astro do what Springer did yesterday.
Overall league OPS is down quite a bit this year. I think the Red Sox are highest in the AL at around .790 or .795. If the Astros have a solid couple of weeks, they can break the .750 barrier, which would mean they match last season's league average OPS and place 4th or 5th in the AL this season. Part of the reason for the suppressed OPS figures to this point probably has to do with the cold weather in April. Another factor might be the construction of the baseball itself. It seems there was quite a lot of controversy between MLB, Rawlings, the players, and the fans about this last year so who knows, maybe someone ordered the specs changed a bit as a result of those discussions. This might be one reason the Astros hitters just aren't hitting the ball as far as they did last year in spite of the fact that nearly all the guys were working out, lifting weights... in general not getting weaker than they were last year.
I think the Astros are just two new hitters away from having that dynamo effect saw last year where good hitting begets good hitting from the buy before you and the guy after you. Right now pitchers can pitch around the Astros' best hitters because they know an easy out is coming up. Take that advantage away, and they have to throw in the strike zone to everyone.

I want them shooting their wad frequently and forcefully. I hope but momentum hasn’t been their thing.

Only 3 K's all night: Marisnick, Stassi, Gattis. Marisnick was the only player to not get a hit or reach base.

I saw somewhere it has only happened 70 times in MLB history. 319 cycles.

I saw somewhere it has only happened 70 times in MLB history. 319 cycles. While the cycle is kind of cool, it’s one of the more overrated things in baseball. Springer’s moment was cooler. Bagwell once walked 6 times in a game.

Most 6 hit games (quite rare in itself) have come in extra innings and most over 12 innings. I await the history gurus who will surely make a list for us. But I'm certain it will be a short one. At least if it is limited to the modern era.

Interesting. Nine players achieved the feat in between 1931 and 1936, but no one did it from 1981-1986

That’s the thing with Marisnick. If you’re going to stink on offense, you better be on your A game every time on the field. The past season and evident last night were his poor routes on deep fly balls. Fisher was never an ace defender to me, but he gets a pass for being new to the big leagues for the most part.
Marisnick needs to go. That’s all there is to it.

Marisnick needs to go. That’s all there is to it. While I'm not saying we couldn't do better, defensive metrics still show both of them (this year and last) as being above average defensively. Both of them normally make the plays they missed yesterday. As for Fisher, there is no reason to give up on him. The guy is young, cheap, and has all the tools. We have 5 more years of control for him. The last two weeks he even has an OPS at exactly 1.000 thanks to the power showing up. Even if he never develops a better AVG or OBP, a guy with big power, good speed, and above average defense has tons of value. He has nothing left to prove in the minors so unless we just want to give him more consistent playing time, he should be on the major league team. In fact (and this will piss people off but so what), I'd be tempted to just leave him in LF full-time for now to see what he does. Maybe for another month even. Gattis and Marisnick could be replaced with White and Davis or *ugh* Kemp, but I think Fisher deserves more time. If he can't get it going, look at the trade market or give Tucker or Ferguson a chance once we reach that service time date.

I only like Fisher in LF. I’m not at all impressed with his routes, getting to bouncers, and his throws. Marisnick at least looks like a good defender unless he has to run back on fly balls.
