If he has the tools, then he can be taught good defense. If he takes bad routes, then first figure out why. Can he see the ball well enough to determine route selection or is he picking up the ball path late and then adjusting. One takes an optometrist to correct and the other takes hard work at the position. It's easiest to go both.

But the Astro have a history of players doing just that. Bagwell adjusting from 3B to 1B as well as Biggio adjusting from Catcher to 2B and then again to LF.
