That may be his future, but he had the best year of all of our catchers, and was one of the higher performing catchers in the AL offensively for most of the year. One of the reasons that I wanted for us to add a bat at the deadline was this issue. He wears down too easily. He started strong and ended almost as badly as Marisnick started. We have to get a better catcher this offseason as our primary target for roster additions. Our staff could get worse next year with the possible rotation of only two guys from this year’s starting unit. To offset that and give the new youngsters some breathing room we have to get our offense back up close to our 2017 levels

Especially Correa and Altuve. Both of them were obviously hampered by their injuries which kept them down. I wouldn't mind improving at Catcher, but there aren't any feasible options that will really be improvements over a potential Stassi-Stubbs tandem. Maldonado is just a backup catcher as well. Plus, we're going to need money to sign other guys and prepare to give raises/extensions to more important players.

I think that the value of game planning is understated because there is no stat to support the perceived notion of this value. Some might say that staff era ranked by catcher might be of some value but given the wide range of talents on various staffs render this worthless. Comparing Catchers on the same staff is also of little value given that the best and most tenured members of a staff would prefer the guy who calls a great game, or the manager may focus on off hand matchups in the line up. The fact that Verlander and Keuchel did not want to pitch to Stassi speaks volumes. A catching tandem of Stubbs and Stassi might produce the offensive stats that we are looking for, perhaps, but the impact on the staff’s effectiveness would be very large. So I think that this is a very bad idea.

Use the money to fill positions where we're going to be lacking. If the young tandem doesn't work, then go after a FA. It's not like the catching situation is going to make or break us.

At some point the pitchers have to work with them and help mold them if necessary.

Waiting until after ST to try to find a FA catcher = you get Hank Conger.

And since we're talking catchers and the postseason roster... Our catchers without Stassi are 1-11 (1-8 for Maldonado). That's what y'all want to re-sign to a multi-year deal?
I'm willing to concede that Stassi isn't necessarily our future (even though he had a very solid season for his first complete season at the MLB level), but Maldonado is certainly not the answer. People here badmouth catchers like Conger and Castro, but both of those guys were far superior to what Maldonado has done for us. It's not even close...

His CS was poor, but I remember him being a good receiver. Only 1 Passed Ball that year.

You’ve been downing him since day one while telling us all to be positive about the rest of the team. You are wasting time trying to show him anything about Maldonado's value to the Astros He hates Maldonado because he came in and put his boy Stassi on the bench where he belongs. If he didn't have shit for brains, he'd see it. He rated Stassi ahead of both Maldonado and McCann. He probably thinks AJ is stupid for not having Stassi on the roster and leaving one of the other two off. This guy has no clue as to how to evaluate a catcher or any other player.

You’ve been downing him since day one while telling us all to be positive about the rest of the team. I've been positive about the things he is good at. In this same thread I stated he exhibited the most power of the catchers and had a great arm. Am I supposed to say he is good at everything else when history, stats, and "my eyes" say differently? I'm positive about players when they have positive attributes, but I never pretend they have something they dont. Maldonado has had success as a great receiver in the past. He doesn't anymore. Fact. He has an elite arm. Fact. He has decent power for a catcher. Fact. He is beyond pathetic at reaching base. Fact. He is no longer good at receiving. Fact. He gives up a ton of Passed Balls and Wild Pitches. Fact. He is a solid backup catcher, but he should not be starting everyday just like Jake shouldn't be. They have value as roleplayers.

Some player won an an award in the past and you assume that means they're still great. "I want Adam Jones!!! Maldonado is a gold glover!!!! Tyler White sucks!!! Kemp shouldn't be on the playoff roster!!!!"

I'm hard on him because I don't think he's very good and I can't believe people want to sign him as a FA and give up on a young controllable player that had a better year and shows more potential. I've said what he is good at. The goods don't outweigh the bads though. I'd have no issue with him if he was being used as the backup catcher that he is. It probably seems like I'm hard on him because I'm trying to show the difference between him and Stassi in order to defend Stassi when people want to give up on him. Same with being tough on Gurriel earlier in the year in order to show that White was being more productive. I don't dislike Gurriel. We've made too many mistakes giving up on young players and this is a time when it doesn't make sense to give up after a year.

Fact: He is considered to be a good receiver, especially by pitchers he works with. FactL: You need to stop pulling information out of your ass and calling it facts.

We've made too many mistakes giving up on young players and this is a time when it doesn't make sense to give up after a year. I assume this "young controllable player that had a better year and shows more potential" is Stassi, who was rated behind our other two catchers and was left off the playoff roster because he was basically useless offensively and defensively after the All-Star break. This is the same young controllable catcher who stayed on the team all year because he is out of options. This is the same guy who had a 'better year" even though most of our starters, especially Verlander, don't want him catching when they pitch. Stassi is a backup...........the front office would be stupid not to try to re-sign Maldonado in hopes he can tutor Stassi and/or Stubbs. If Stubbs is ready, this "young controllable player" is history. Stassi will be 28 in March and that is not considered to be young by baseball standards.
