I voted for Devo, he was loose let him finish it off. Bringing in Giles cold in a situation literally is not a good at that point. IMO.

True, but who do you feel should be the fireman?

So far, Match-up Mack is working. Go with the match-up rather than Studly Do-Right exclusively. Now my preference is to step into a time machine and bring back Lidge/Dotel/Wagner in their prime, but we have who we have. And that's better than we often have had.

I went with Peacock even though with the Astros right now there is a pitcher looking to take that role with command

I miss Wagner screwing over teams wanting to put in their left handed sluggers at the plate.

Tonight I was afraid with the conditions he wasn't going to find the plate, we have seen that in 90 degree games. It would have been a travesty if he would have blown the game after JV left it all out in the field for seven.

think about that for a minute, that bullpen with our current starters.

True, but who do you feel should be the fireman? I think there'll be games like this one tonite that discount the need for a fireman. Hinch went in backwards order with the back of the pen and we still got the W No one in the relief core fits the description of a fireman anyway. We've been talking about a pen full of 8th-inning guys since 2016 and 2 years later it's still the same bullpen

Peacock should be the closer with Devenski as a backup. I wouldn't let Giles in the game unless we are at least 5 runs ahead. He is TERRIBLE.

It looks like pen by committee, with these new guys not established yet, who know how much of a factor even Smith or Rondon is going to have this season. Giles is as frustrating a case as I’ve ever seen. There are times when even last season we saw him give batters such hopeless AB’s with him mercilessly pounding the mitt with heaters and dipping the slider in and out of the strike zone. He is Kimbrel-esque at times. Then, just as quickly, he’ll get into a funk which can last weeks, and Hinch has to figure out what to do in the meantime. This lack of consistency is why he cannot be trusted in game situations. You never know if Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde will be on the mound that day. I get that closers don’t grow on trees, but how long can the team afford to massage his ego? The postseason is the time when a player must showcase his absolute best. We all saw how he did. What more can be said?

Please include reasoning for your decision. I voted to outsource the job... Every major company is doing it... Why not the Astros too?!

What more can be said? I agree with your post 100%. One wonders is it a lack of concentration. As much as I watch him, the only thing that he repeats with his mechanics is the squat. To hang his favorite pitch it comes down to grip and release, on a cold day the odds are against him.

I voted for Thomas, since you did not list the true options, Rondon or Smith. I’d probably go with Rondon.

Thomas has to include his reasoning for voting for himself You want a "Drop the Mic" kind of guy to be your closer. Plus, I stand up to pee..I am willing to bet the Astros current closer does not.

Always go with the hot hand. Let Giles pout all he wants. Maybe he will learn to work on his slider or a third pitch if he wants to be an effective closer.

Giles is (and should be) the closer until he proves ineffective this season in save situations. He had too good a year last year before the playoffs (when ALL of our relievers struggled, including Devenski) to give up on him now.

I think it's unproductive to even apply the "closer" concept on this team. The question of who pitches the 9th should come down to rest, matchups, and Strom's subjective evaluation of who is on top of their game on a given day. On any given day, I could see Smith, Rondon, Harris, Peacock, McHugh, even Giles pitching the 9th. Ahead or behind isn't so much the issue as who is most likely to get outs against that particular opponent.

I agree....I don't care if Giles is upset or not....He started to falter in September...his ERA was good 1.64, but batters started to hit him, .262 BAA...and before that all his months were sub .200 with the exception of May, where BAA was right at .200...
His 2017 playoff games were downright awful, especially the League championship series and World Series...where his BAA were .357 and .444....plus last two series, he was averaging a walk in each inning...so they were either hitting him or getting a free pass....
This year, he has not issued a walk yet, but he has .333BAA...
So his suckiness has transferred over from the end of last year...

I hope the Astros go after Miller, Allen or Kimbrel this upcoming FA period....and Riley Ferrell can make the jump to the big leagues...

Closers maybe take 3-4 year deal..and they are $15M a year...Miller, Allen or Kimbrel are top-end too...I am hoping the Astros can re-sign Morton...I am pretty sure Keuchel and Marwin are gone....

Right, so we're going to need to invest in at least a proven #3-4 starter and some type of defensive utility player for the infield (Tucker will likely be in LF next year anyways). Plus, we'll need a to sign a catcher after this year at least as a backup to Stassi even if he stays healthy and proves he can be the main backstop.
