Here's the Litmus test for relievers: You hear it all the time...fans, players or announcers say, "The team is hoping to avoid facing (Chapman, Jansen, etc, etc)." Do teams hope to avoid facing Squatting Ken? I doubt it. Or, "OMG, hope we don't have to face Wil Harris!" I can't remember if it was yesterday or today Mad Dog mentioned in a playoff series on the line "do you think the Yankees are going to be afraid of the Stros pen".

Surprised you don't see teams lighting candles, praying for the Astros relievers to get into the game.

Yes, the reason why Giles draws the ire of the fanbase is because the team won a championship in spite of him rather than because of him. Sure, he did well during the season, but he failed when Hinch needed him the most.

If it is down to the Yankees-Stros ALCS, AJ will probably go back to the same formula. I took some heat after the Yankees series, if it was October maybe I would cry, there is a long time until then and things can change.

Just remember what you want a closer to be able to do. Giles numbers in various roles, including Save situations:

Closers also typically pitch in the 9th inning of tie games at home, and the video shows the result of that, mister.

Was that the tie game against the Yankees when Giles came in to pitch the 9th and Sanchez lined a three run homer off the green over the centerfield fence

I don't know. How many opportunities do we give any struggling player who has had success in the past? Eh, it’s not like he’s some lifetime achievement award candidate like K-Rod. Sure, but he's had runs of good success too. If you have a player who is good in certain situations, and you have plenty of those situations available during the season, why not use him? I agree we still need some help in our bullpen, but like I was telling Papa in another thread, we need somebody we can count on in the different types of stressful situations. Like Andrew Miller was. Closing out final innings with small or mild leads isn't really the problem. It's extra innings and earlier in games in close games.

Among Astros relievers, all have done well over the past month all things considered, but a couple guys are due for a change in fortune.
Harris has dealt with an unusual spate of HR balls but pitched well otherwise, and he is due for a stretch of dominance this summer.
Sipp, on the other hand, has gotten away with some bad pitches and is due for a blow-up or two. Sipp projects to head toward the 3.60 to 3.70 range in terms of ERA, so when I say 'blowing up' it doesn't mean becoming really bad.
Rondon and Giles are showing no major warning signs either and should do fine. The numbers say Peacock is the weakest pitcher in the bullpen by expected ERA though not by stamina. If he's the worst pitcher on the staff, Lord have mercy on the Astros' opponents.

I discovered on youtube today that Ken Giles has reinvented himself as a retro musician
I guess we don't have to worry about Giles-related Heart Attacks in the postseason
