I voted for Thomas, since you did not list the true options, Rondon or Smith. I’d probably go with Rondon. I completely forgot about them.

I hope the Astros go after Miller, Allen or Kimbrel this upcoming FA period....and Riley Ferrell can make the jump to the big leagues... Man, the Indians are going to have both their fireman reliever and closer hit free agency? They better do something about that. I also hope that Miller doesn’t reject the Astros AGAIN.

Right, so we're going to need to invest in at least a proven #3-4 starter and some type of defensive utility player for the infield (Tucker will likely be in LF next year anyways). Plus, we'll need a to sign a catcher after this year at least as a backup to Stassi even if he stays healthy and proves he can be the main backstop. Yeah, we’re set to possibly lose our former ace (sorry, Keuchel), both catchers, and the best utility player in baseball to free agency. Those are a lot of needs before getting a closer to be honest.

And some of if it we can reasonably replace with in-house moves, but even with all that covered, we need to start saving big future money for Correa and/or Springer if we want to hold on to them.

I wouldn't bank on Marwin being that big of a target for other teams, if he continues to regress to the mean as he's been doing lately.

think about that for a minute, that bullpen with our current starters. It's the closest thing to orgasm this old man knows.

Giles is as frustrating a case as I’ve ever seen. There are times when even last season we saw him give batters such hopeless AB’s with him mercilessly pounding the mitt with heaters and dipping the slider in and out of the strike zone. He is Kimbrel-sequel at times. Then, just as quickly, he’ll get into a funk which last weeks, and Hinch has to figure out what to do in the meantime. This lack of consistency is why he cannot be trusted in game situations. You never know if Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde will be on the mound that day. I get that closers don’t grow on trees, but how long can the team afford to massage his ego? The postseason is the time when a player must showcase his absolute best. We all saw how he did. What more can be said? I agree with your post 100%. One wonders is it a lack of concentration. As much as I watch him, the only thing that he repeats with his mechanics is the squat. To hang his favorite pitch it comes down to grip and release, on a cold day the odds are against him. This brings back painful memories of discussions about another pitcher. J. R. Richard before he suffered a stroke. Everyone knew the problem was in his head. But few thought that was literal.

Yeah JR being six foot eight had trouble with the mechanics of being able to repeat them. He was intimidating on the mound.

Yeah but I don't think we'll cough up a lot of money to keep him either.

I can agree to what you are saying, but it really works out so much better for the Astros if McCullers can make his mark as a starter...Keuchel is gone this next year...I am hoping the Astros can keep Morton....Verlander and Cole are up for FA in 2020, so a lot is riding on McCullers to establish himself... Someone needs to give Lance the Yoda speech: Do or not Do, There is No Try!

Good point, Thomas. I forgot about Morton. That’ll be a big loss too.

The Rangers may be willing to trade Kela this year. Would he satisfy the definition of a "top-end closer"?

He will really setback the team next year, and especially in 2020, if he doesn't start pitching like a #2 or better

If Morton retires and Kuechel leaves then McCullers failing to step up will be a problem. If Morton stays on board and continues as he has so far with the Astros, moving McCullers to relief would not be terrible. I say this fully with the expectation that Armenteros will move into the rotation next year and Whitley in 2020. Keeping Verlander and Cole in 2021 is critical.

Maybe Felipe Rivero changed his last name because he got off to a bad start.
Maybe this is a solution for Giles. He can change his name to _______________________. (fill in the blank)
