Altuve’s lack of power so far is troubling, though.

Just got back, not a good night it would appear. Cole did his job and the offense went back to sleep.

Correa choking in the 8th was one of key moments that allowed the Angels to get away with the game. That and Gattis failing to connect with the middle-middle meatball in the 9th. And the unnecessarily aggressive baserunning to end the game.
The Astros managed 7 hits in the game, and I have to think that if Reddick and White had started, the hit total would have been at least 9, probably more. That likely would have allowed the Astros to get on the board. Very rarely does a team get 9 hits and fail to score a couple of runs. I'm hoping that Luhnow will soon be satisfied that he's seen enough of Gattis and Marisnick to let them go in favor of guys who are proving their value in AAA.

Somehow I think that blister will keep Ohtani from going very deep into tomorrow's game, and may affect his command even before he gets pulled. So good chances tomorrow.
Cole has to still be in the running for AL Pitcher of the Month.

The Astros hitters played the entire game back on their heels. The Angels took it to them and they simply were not up to the challenge.

Cole should be kept around if possible for the long haul.

The Astros hitters need to apologize to Cole and donate their salaries for tonight's game to charity since they gave the game to the Angels. Why do we keep putting Gattis and Marisnick in the lineup at the same time? Reddick hits lefties so why was she not in the lineup? Gattis and Marisnick don't hit anybody. We have three pieces of dead weight on this roster........Marisnick, Gattis, and Fisher. Changes need to be made now.
Hinch made a huge mistake by not having Reddick in the lineup. He has been hot and Jake isn't hitting anything, but, Jake starts because he has been successful against Skaggs. Sometimes you need to ignore the numbers.

Like Giles, the Astros are heavily invested in Gattis. Marisnick is being paid close to $2 million this season. Those are reasons why they’re getting an abnormal amount of chances.
The reasoning behind Gattis getting playing time is that he has value as a catcher. So far, he has amassed one game at catcher and didn’t even start that game. Plus, he’s a feel-good story. He is a guy with a lot of power but has an unorthodox swing, which is not conducive for consistent hitting. For a guy with his size and power, he hits way too many weak grounders, which hampers his ability to drive in runs. He is a poor DH.
Marisnick is a plus defender who should have a bat good enough to bring up the bottom of the order. That is not the case. Now, if you play premium defense, at least bat .220. People like Rey Ordóñez and Adam Everett come to mind. Whatever offense he’s displaying is far from even that. It is a slap in the face to minor leaguers desperately needing a shot in the big leagues.

Gattis' hop at the end of every missed swing has lost its charm I miss the Gattis who could crush pitches near his face. Now, whatever he swings at is generally a chopper or a whiff.

Part of the feel-good story about Gattis is his recovery from addiction, getting off the streets, etc. However those years of his life also took a toll on his body and that could be a part of what appears to be a somewhat early onset of age-related decline. Doesn't mean he can't live to a ripe old age with good diet and exercise (that will be up to him), but to excel as a professional athlete is pretty hard if the body has been abused by chemicals and poor nutrition for too long.

He seems to be right on some pitches but ends up missing them altogether. I can't believe he is this bad unless there is a problem somewhere.

I admire Gattis as much as anyone for overcoming addiction and being homeless. His story should encourage anyone and let them know they can overcome things like this. But, he needs to start earning his roster spot.

Especially after these same players brought so much success last year.

Gattis hit well below the league average over the entire second half of last season and hasn't hit well in the first month or so of the 2018 season. I really do think that fans were (mostly) patient with him during July, August, and September of 2017... but now his poor hitting has continued and so I don't really blame people for wanting to move on from him. If there were some aspect of his hitting peripherals (such as his plate discipline, ground ball avoidance, or exit velocities) that pointed to promise for the future then I'd hold off on judging him that way, but in reality, his peripherals all point to a further deterioration.
He's done quite a lot by staying in the big leagues this long and he can have a future in baseball if he wants (front office job, scouting, etc.) but I think his tenure as Astros DH/C is about up. Very few homeless people make it as big as Gattis has or achieve the kind of financial prosperity he now enjoys. If he manages that money well and puts it to good use (setting up a business or whatever), he can be very comfortable for the rest of his life.

I was just watching high lights of last night game on the network, and a prop I can give Jake is how he played the fence on the double hit by Upton last night. He played the carom, if it got by him it could have ended into a inside the park trip.
